Book Description
This volume contends that the Gospel of John presents the most thorough and robust Wisdom Christology of all the New Testament books. Wisdom Christology—the christological concept that applies the roles, characteristics, and functions of God’s personified wisdom to the man Jesus Christ—is displayed to be skillfully interwoven throughout all twenty-one chapters of the Fourth Gospel, starting with the famous prologue. In response to the prevailing tendency among interpreters to project postbiblical understandings of Jesus from the fourth- and fifth-century church councils back into the Gospel of John, this volume shows that a more fitting context emerges from Jewish Wisdom literature. By situating the Johannine Jesus in his first-century Jewish context, readers can appreciate John’s commitment to monotheism and Jesus’ role as the Father’s highly empowered human agent, fully embodying Lady Wisdom.

Book Description
In her remarkable first book, God Dwells With Us: Temple Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel, Mary L. Coloe, P.B.V.M., explored the profound insight of John's Gospel expressed in Jesus ' invitation to his disciples: Make your home in me, as I make mine in you (John 15:4). For the gospel's author and audience, the dwelling of God among humans was, above al, the Jerusalem Temple. The gospel traces how 'after the trauma of the destruction of the Temple 'the Johannine community came to expand and deepen its knowledge of God's dwelling among humans, finding it now in the person of Jesus and in the community of believers. Dwelling in the Household of God moves us from seeing God's dwelling place as the Temple to seeing God's dwelling place within the community of believers. The starting point now is an image in John 14:2: my Father's house, which is given its Old Testament meaning of my father's household. Our awareness thus moves, like that of the first Christians, from understanding My father's house as the Temple (John 2:16) to My Father's Household as a community of believers drawn into Jesus ' own divine filiation. Coloe invites us to re-read the gospel from the post-Easter perspective of those who have become brothers and sisters of Jesus and living Temples of God's presence. What emerges is nothing less than a profound mysticism of the mutual indwelling of God and believers. Mary Coloe, PBVM, DTh, holds a joint teaching position at the Australian Catholic University and St Paul's Seminary, Brisbane. Her publications include numerous articles and God Dwells With Us: Temple Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel (Liturgical Press, 2001).

Book Description
Jesus as depicted in the Fourth Gospel is remarkably dissimilar to the Jesus found in the synoptic gospels. In this book, Witherington places the Gospel of John within its proper literary, historical, social and theological contexts. What emerges is a compelling argument that the Gospel of John has an agenda for mission, in addition to concerns for discipleship and community life.

Book Description
The path of wisdom from Solomon to Jesus and from Jesus to the churchIn the early Jesus movement, wisdom in the person of Jesus was believed to have returned to heaven, exalted to the right hand of God, and to reign from there. But Jesus as wisdom had left both his legacy and his influence behind. The sayings of Jesus recorded in the Gospels reflect not only the influence of the Israelite wisdom traditions, but also the tradition of the personification of wisdom. In this provocative volume newly available in paperback, Ben Witherington provides both an introduction to Israel's wisdom traditions and insight into how Jesus and his sayings fit in that tradition. Beyond this, he demonstrates the on-going significance and influence of these traditions on other New Testament writings. He concludes that Jesus may be viewed primarily as a prophetic sage emphasizing instruction, insight, and humor in a vein counter to the dominant culture.

Book Description
Entering into the renewed and sometimes confusing attempts to comprehend the work of Jesus of Nazareth and his person, Ben Witherington guides the reader through a vast complex of ancient documents and contemporary questions. He shows that Jesus' contemporaries viewed Jesus as a Jewish prophetic sage whose teaching and style were a reflection of the convergence of Hebrew wisdom and prophetic forms and ideas. Witherington traces the path of wisdom from its earliest manifestations in the Hebrew Bible to its importance in the work of Jesus and then to its apparent influence on the Christology of Paul and other New Testament writers. The result is a masterful contribution to scholarship, written with verve and clarity.

Book Description
The field of Johannine Christology has been well covered, but Mr. Sidebottom has found new things to say and new material to put before the reader. His method is to analyze the language used about our Lord by the writer of the Fourth Gospel and to interpret it in the light of contemporary first-century thought and phraseology. Those who are already familiar with the Hermetic and similar literature will find new insights here; while for those who have not yet become acquainted with it, Mr. Sidebottom is a learned and stimulating guide. The student will be particularly grateful for the way in which he gathers into a convenient compass much of importance that has hitherto been difficult to access, and for his dealing less in generalizations than in direct quotations from which the reader is encouraged to draw his own conclusions.
