Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book Description
From the legendary editor who helped shape modern cookbook publishing-one of the food world's most admired figures-comes this evocative and inspiring memoir. Living in Paris after World War II, Jones broke free of bland American food and reveled in everyday French culinary delights. On returning to the States she published Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The rest is publishing and gastronomic history. A new world now opened up to Jones as she discovered, with her husband Evan, the delights of American food, publishing some of the premier culinary luminaries of the twentieth century: from Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher to Claudia Roden, Edna Lewis, and Lidia Bastianich. Here also are fifty of Jones's favorite recipes collected over a lifetime of cooking-each with its own story and special tips. The Tenth Muse is an absolutely charming memoir by a woman who was present at the creation of the American food revolution and played a pivotal role in shaping it.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Tenth Muse It is plain enough that he loved country things, for a dozen books show it; but it is scarcely credible with what pure intensity this passion burned in him. The quietness of his writing, the irony, the acute wit, the never embarrassed penetration of his insight, the unexcitable strength of his mind, might mislead one into thinking him a man of cool tastes and desires. He was not. His physical qualities and appetites were powerful and fine; for all desirable physical as for all desirable spiritual things he simply hungered and thirsted; it was only his restraint and reserve that deceived. His physical presence itself was powerful and fine; his friends found him enviably handsome, although perhaps I ought to say that admiration never permitted me to think whether he was or was not. Nothing could be quieter than his eye, stiller than his body; at times his passiveness seemed indolent and complete. Yet he was the most restless of men, impatient of confinement, a wanderer who found his main delight in turning homeward, loving motion for its physical activity and for its perpetual freshening of the eye. He would go long distances for short visits, and use incredible care in order to spend an hour with a friend. In his desire of friends, again, the strength of his nature was shown. He had great capacities and great loyalties; the loss of a friend, if it unluckily occurred, through misunderstanding or the mere wryness of another's mind, hurt and oppressed him. Excerpt from The Muse, 1909, Vol. 11 In school his b'est work was rather that of a coordinator and inspirer of stimulating and guiding influences and of a faithful pastor than of a mere teacher of books. He gathered about him during his long administration 11 number Of truly able and admirable teachers} and, with whatever of unavoidable changes as the years went by, he preserved the distinct and characteristic flavor of moral and Spiritual culture which has made St. Mary's School under him and his father dear to the hearts of southern Churchnien. He commanded the respect and affection of all his pupils, and the name of Smedes will not soon be forgotten in the hundreds of households all over the South where his influence has been felt for good.
