Book Description
This Handbook re-examines the concept of early modern history in a European and global context. The term 'early modern' has been familiar, especially in Anglophone scholarship, for four decades and is securely established in teaching, research, and scholarly publishing. More recently, however, the unity implied in the notion has fragmented, while the usefulness and even the validity of the term, and the historical periodisation which it incorporates, have been questioned. The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern European History, 1350-1750 provides an account of the development of the subject during the past half-century, but primarily offers an integrated and comprehensive survey of present knowledge, together with some suggestions as to how the field is developing. It aims both to interrogate the notion of 'early modernity' itself and to survey early modern Europe as an established field of study. The overriding aim will be to establish that 'early modern' is not simply a chronological label but possesses a substantive integrity. Volume I examines 'Peoples and Place', assessing structural factors such as climate, printing and the revolution in information, social and economic developments, and religion, including chapters on Orthodoxy, Judaism and Islam.

Book Description
Das mehrsprachige Handbuch ist auf die folgenden Aspekte fokussiert: 1) the self-reflection of early modern philosophy, 2) the analysis of early modern knowledge about nature, 3) early modern knowledge about man in general and 4) early modern knowledge about human action in particular, and 5) the relation between early modern knowledge and its environment.

Book Description
The English composer Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) stands out as one of the most intriguing artistic figures of her day. Despite living at a time when women were often held to be utterly lacking in creative powers, she made her way unswervingly as a professional composer, writing several operas, orchestral works, chamber music and songs - works that were performed with success during her lifetime. This volume brings together papers delivered at two conferences held in Detmold and Oxford in 2008 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Ethel Smyth's birth.

This extensively illustrated book offers a new kind of introduction to Europe between 1500 and 1800. It considers the evolving economy and society - the basic facts of life for the majority of Europe's people. It shows how the religious and intellectual unity of western culture fragmented and dissolved under the impact of new ideas. It also examines politics to consider the emergence of modern attitudes and techniques in governing.
