Book Description
Thomas Hooker (1586-1647) is known as the "Father of Connecticut." He was born in Marfield, England and attended school in Cambridge. For four years he was a popular preacher at Chelmsford, England, but was eventually silenced for declining conformity to "superstitious externals." He taught for a while and then left for Holland. After three years, in 1633, he sailed for New England with friends John Cotton and Samuel Stone. Initially he pastored in Newtown (Cambridge), then removed to Hartford. This biography offers reasons to dispute the commonly held belief that Hooker left Massachusetts because he had a clash with John Cotton. He was formative in the governments of church and state of colonial New England. A chapter presents different selections illustrating Hooker's writings. This book was previously published as "Lives of the Chief Fathers of New England," Vol. 6., 324 pages, Boston, 1870.

Book Description
Examining the relationship between Hooker's activities and his writings, Frank Shuffelton considers his role in the crises of early New England politics and religion. The author analyzes Hooker's works and shows that as preacher and pastor, theologian and architect of the Puritan religious community, Thomas Hooker voiced concerns that remained important throughout American history. The analysis of Hooker's career is especially valuable for the information it provides concerning his close involvement with the major issues of the day: the conflict between Roger Williams and the Bay Colony; the antinomian controversy; the political and religious striving of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; and the forming of a truly American community. The author distinguishes several phases in Hooker's activities that correspond to his cultural and geographical milieu at different times. He discusses Hooker's education, first pastoral experience, and career. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book Description
Puritan minister, colonial pioneer, and inspiration for the first ever democratic constitution - Thomas Hooker's fine example of religious and public service is explored in this biography. During his researches into the local history of Connecticut and the Hartford Church, George Leon Walker uncovered enough information to justify a biography of Thomas Hooker. After several years of meticulous research, corroborating historical sources, accounts and records of the early colonial period with Hooker's own surviving written works, he published this account of the great preacher's life and achievements in 1891. We follow Thomas Hooker from his youth in an England rent by religious conflict, through his education at Cambridge University, through initial demonstrations of his great and inspiring oratorical gifts. His sympathy for Puritanism in the 1620s disrupted his quiet life as a preacher and lecturer in England, and he was forced to leave the country for the Netherlands, and then onward to New England.
