The reader is strongly urged to give his principles, plans, and methods the' consideration they deserve; and, by imitating and obeying the Great Exemplar so faithfully followed by Mr. Livesey, to labour for the promotion of the cause of universal good among men, and (as far as human effort can promote such. An end) the glory of God. Of the portraits of Mr. Livesey inserted in this volume, it may be well to explain that the steel engraving facing title page is from a photograph taken in 1862; the photograph which faces the Autobiography was taken when. Mr. Livesey was in his 88th year; while the lithographed one is from a photograph taken late in life. I have to thank Mr. William Livesey for his hearty co operation in this work, especially for his assistance ln arranging the Appendix; but it is only just to that gentleman to say that he 18 in no way, even by suggestion, responsible for the line I have taken ln the Introductory Chapters. According to announcement the present volume should have appeared several months ago; but the delay has arisen from circumstances beyond control, the chief cause being the partial breakdown of the writer's health during the progress of the work. This book explores the history of the Australian temperance movement and the ideas that informed it, offering a detailed examination of the beliefs of evangelicals involved. The temperance movement in Australia was large and influential, and played a vital role in shaping the cultural and political life of the emerging nation across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The study focuses on the relationship between evangelicalism and 'Moral Enlightenment' ideas within the temperance movement between 1832 and 1930. In Victorian Labour History: Experience, Identity and the Politics of Representation, John Host addresses liberal, Marxist and postmodernist historiography on Victorian working people to question the special status of historical knowledge. The central focus of this study is a debate about mid-Victorian social stability, a condition conventionally equated with popular acceptance of the social order. Host does not join the debate but takes it as his object of analysis, deconstructing the notion of stability and the analyses that purport to explain it. In particular, he takes issue with historical evidence, noting the different possibilities for meaning that it allows and the speculative character of the narratives to which it is adduced. Host examines an extensive range of archival material to illustrate the ambiguity of the historical field, the rhetorical strategies through which the illusion of its unity is created, and the ultimately fictive quality of historical narrative. He then explores the political contingency of the works he addresses and the political consequences of representing them as true.

The power of the popular press presents all modern societies with difficulties. It is, however, a problem with a history: the hold of the press over public opinion was debated with urgency throughout the 19th century. This book looks at the ways in which individuals, pressure groups, political organisations and the state sought to understand the mass communications media of the 19th century, and use them to influence public opinion and effect moral and social reform. Aled Jones addresses the problem by using three approaches: first he considers the 19th century theories of the influence of communications media on patterns of social thought and behaviour; then he examines attitudes towards the press in both high and popular culture; finally he explores the social and intellectual world of the reader, the consumer both of the press as a commodity and of the hidden moral strategies that were built into it. The tensions between Victorian moral imperatives and the operation of the free commercial market raised issues of great public concern, such as whether the mass media should be under private or public control. These tensions have dominated the way in which Britain and other western societies have thought about the newer broadcasting media, but their origins are older and more complex than studies of contemporary media acknowledge.
