Book Description
Excerpt from Ten Studies in the Psalms There is, perhaps, no part of the Old Testament which speaks so simply and directly to the universal heart as the Psalter. Yet even the most familiar psalms come home to us with increased freshness and power when, by sympathetic study, we have traveled back to the world in which their writers stood, and learned to look out upon it with their eyes. The short studies in this volume are an attempt to interpret, in this way, a few of the psalms that deal with important aspects of the religious life, and to show their vital bearing upon the life of to-day. In their doubts, struggles, and aspirations, those ancient men are very near us, and they speak to us with an accent that is strangely modern. I have tried to make this plain in the course of the exposition, and to illustrate their kinship with us by quotation from modern writers. The treatment of the psalms here selected is expository. But, without. Being didactic or homiletic, I have at the same time sought to make it practically helpful, by gathering up the study of each psalm in a series of personal questions, which are intended both to carry the reader into the heart of the psalm, and also to enable him to search his own inner life. I desire here to express my obligation to Messrs. Charles Serib ner's Sons for their generous courtesy in allowing me to reprint, from my volume on The Messages of the Psalmists in The Mes sages of the Bible Series the paraphrase of the psalms here selected for study. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in the Book of Psalms To call job a tragedy and Solomon's song a comedy is literary trifling and is confusing. If no better name exists, it were better to rec ognize the new type and to invent a new name. The poetry of the Hebrews is so dif ferent, in respect to even the poetic elements, from other poetry as to require a unique analysis and a unique description, and why not its products? The Hebrews acted as diflerently from Europeans in this as they did in the matter of tense, and as in the case Of the tense, it results in as much confusion to speak Of Hebrew drama. Solomon's song is a single poem or a series of poems grouped into a unity, on the subject of love and would better be called an idyl. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Testament Problems: Critical Studies in the Psalms Isaiah It will be observed that on some points of detail I modify views that were expressed in my earlier volume. The main position there assumed, however, has undergone no change. I have still much to set forth that could not be presented in connexion with the accompanying studies. In the meantime, I venture to think that enough has been said to justify the claim that such lines of research as I have pursued represent an alter native Criticism of the Old Testament from which results of peculiar interest may be expected. One thing, however, it may be confidently asserted, is certain, and that is, that whatever that period is, and whoever the authors may have been, {many of the conceptions contained in the Psalms re flect developments of thought among pious Israelites from a time long anterior to the foundation of the Monarchy to a time which may be roughly described as the Maccabaean 3 period. Excerpt from The Book of Psalms Tosomeitmayseem almostasacrilegetoapplythemethods of criticism to such a book.
