Book Description
Despite its global popularity, rap has received little scholarly attention in terms of its poetic features. Rhymes in the Flow systematically analyzes the poetics (rap beats, rhythms, rhymes, verse and song structures) of many notable rap songs to provide new insights on rap artistry and performance. Defining and describing the features of what rappers commonly call flow, the authors establish a theory of the rap line as they trace rap’s deepest roots and stylistic evolution—from Anglo-Saxon poetry to Lil Wayne—and contextualize its complex poetics. Rhymes in the Flow helps explain rap’s wide appeal by focusing primarily on its rhythmic and thematic power, while also claiming its historical, cultural, musical, and poetic importance.

Book Description
If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners.Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Book Description
For years Rap artists have met with mixed reception—acclaimed by fans yet largely overlooked by scholars. Focusing on 135 tracks from 56 artists, this survey appraises the artistry of the genre with updates to the traditional methods and measures of musicology. Rap synthesizes rhythmic vocals with complex beats, intonational systems, song structures, orchestration and instrumentalism. The author advances a rethinking of musical notation and challenges the conventional understanding of Rap through analysis of such artists as Eminem, Kanye West and Jean Grae.

Book Description
From its dynamic start at dance parties in the South Bronx in the late 1970s, hip hop and rap music have exploded into a dominant style of popular music in the United States and a force for activism and expression all over the world. So, too, has scholarship on hip hop and rap music grown. Yet much of this scholarship, employing methods drawn from sociology and literature, leaves unaddressed the expressive musical choices made by hip hop artists. Fundamental among these choices is the rhythm of the rapping voice, termed "flow." Flow presents unique theoretical and analytical challenges. It is rhythmic in the same way other music is rhythmic, but also in the way speech and poetry are rhythmic. For the first time, Mitchell Ohriner's Flow: The Rhythmic Voice in Rap Music reconciles approaches to key concepts of rhythm, such as meter, periodicity, patterning, and accent, treated independently across other branches of scholarship. Ohriner theorizes flow by weaving between the methods of computational music analysis and humanistic close reading. Through the analysis of large collections of verses and individual tracks, the book addresses theories of rhythm, meter, and groove in the unique ecology of rap music. In a series of case studies in the second half, the work of Eminem clarifies how flow can relate to text, the work of Black Thought of The Roots clarifies how flow can relate to other instrumental streams, and the work of Talib Kweli clarifies how flow can relate to rap's persistent meter. While Ohriner focuses on rap music throughout the book, the methods he introduces will be useful for other musical genres that feature the voice freely interacting with a more rigid metric framework.

Book Description
In Book of Rhymes, the author breaks down his perspective on the power of writing, he feels writing is historical because it can out live you and give light to other generations. This is a book where anyone who is taking a leap of faith can relate to. If not anything, this is a collection of scriptural art that takes you on spiritual journey. " Poetry is everyday life, it's like brail, the reader can feel what you write you know what I mean? I feel like it's a reciprocated remedy for the spirit. Poetry allows me to get shit that's stuck in my head, out and express and articulate whats on my thoughts. This was never for attention." -Slade The consistent message in this book of poems, parables, short stories, is the author challenging the reader to think outside the box, subconsciously. Slade opens up about our primary language the Mdw Ntchr and about how powerful Black civilizations were and how we have that same DNA, in our blood. as fore mentioned in his first novel, The Alarm Clock, it's time for us wake up. During that time, the Kemetic people, came together to build these prolific monuments to show generation after generation, how powerful they were. By them building these monuments, such as the pyramids, they created an economy for their whole population, the whole civilization was wealthy; this is the power of unity, the black community needs to come together and learn from our ancestors. Book of Rhymes, is a monument that will live throughout generations for the people who can relate to the message. Fun fact: Kemet means the black people. This novel drops September 3rd, the ninth month of the year. This was a nine month project of pure dedication. This is a new vibe as Slade exposes his creative side. Follow, this is an unreleased poem by the author... Elevated like a cosmo They wonderin where i went Where i go? I go Higher Stayed down too long But gravity can't hold me down, No more No more? No more suits, llc No more ties System fed me lies All this pain I never cried Sung to my rhymes Like a caged bird Lifted off Indica Stay in trees So I built a nest Habakuk 2 verse 3 Vision on tablets built my legacy Where i go? Say hello to the bad guy I'm gone. Peace Book of Rhymes September 3 "Its gon be like one of them bibles in the baptist church you pick up during the choir time. People really might sing some of the poems in there! But its written by a real one, you know what I mean, y'all know the writer. If you want to research who wrote this, I'm right here; it's all for the love of humanity." -Darrell Q. Slade
