Book Description
Excerpt from Materials for a History of the Wither Family In the early sixties a young Oxford undergraduate, preparing for the history schools, as he leant Sunday after Sunday during the long vacation over the edge of the high family pew in the unrestored parish Church of Wootton St. Lawrence, near Basingstoke - gazed with increasing interest at the following monumental inscription on the opposite wall: - 'William Wither Esquire died Oct:31 1789 aged 86. On his death, all the male issue Of an ancient and well respected family, Who had resided at Manydown During the space of four centuries Became extinct." "Four centuries in 1789, that takes one back (he said to himself) to the reign of Richard II. I wonder what the succession of the Withers of Manydown was, and what sort of life a country squire lived in those days. Visions of the manorial system; of the estate divided into two portions, that in demesne and that held by the villagers in villenage; of the manorial courts and of the lord dispensing justice - rose before him. Some day I will write a history of the family and of the manor." Time passed. After Oxford came residence abroad. Then Holy Orders with exacting ministerial work. Excerpt from History of the Keller Family The Editors take this way of thanking all who helped toward bringing this book to completion. They trust that some younger person will now take up this work of collecting and organizing historical material where our faithful historian leaves it. Some information came too late, for which Space has been devoted at the close of this book. Death visited the Editorial Committee while in the very midst of its plans and work, and took away Reuben Keller. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Campbell Family All races of men seem to have an intuitive feeling that it is a subject of legitimate pride to be one of a clan or family whose name in written large in past history and present affairs. Everybody likes to know something about his forefathers, and to be able to tell to his children the tales or stories about their ancestors, which he himself has heard from his parents. The commandment Honor thy father and thy mother is good and sufficient authority for that feeling of reverence which is so generally shown towards a line of honorable ancestry. The history of the family was a matter of much importance to the Greeks; it was the custom of the early Roman to place in the aula of his house the images of the illustrious men of his family; the Chinese go so far as to magnify such reverence into ancestor worship, and even the red Indian of our own Northwest recorded the traditions of his ancestors on the totem of his tribe. Well, then, may the story of the chivalry, courage and even lawlessness (so often the mate of courage) of their forefathers find a responsive echo in the hearts of Campbells of the present generation, who come of ane house and are of ane surname, notwithstanding this lang time bygane." Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Everhart and Shower Families, From 1744 to 1883 Embracing Six Generations Every one, who undertakes to write a book, should have a laudable object in view. It was not from any desire, to make a display of literary talent, or be classed as an Author, that we were induced to collect the facts contained in this little volume. But it was a labor of love, in order that the history of our forefathers might not be forever lost; that the story of their lives might be perpetuated and read by future generations. The idea of writing this historical sketch was first suggested, at a reunion of the family of Geo. Everhart, (the great grand-son of Paul Everhart) when he was 75 years old, and all his sons and daughters, with their wives and husbands, had assembled at the homestead. It was with feelings of intense delight, that we sat and listened to the aged father, as he related his recollections of the long, long past. It was then, and there, we resolved to put into a permanent form a history of the Everhart and Shower Families. How well we have succeeded in the resolution, we submit to the judgment of those who are also interested in the matter. Book Description
Excerpt from A Narrative History of the Harding Family: With Illustrations This narrative was commenced in 1899, out of love for and in the interest of the little cousins, Allan Cope Harding and Barstow Harding Miller, so that wherever the word your appears it refers to them. As often happens in writing such little histories, this has become more extensive than originally intended, until it includes each and every member of our American line. In the book of Royal Descent compiled by Miss T. E. Sharpe of England, the descent is brought down to the American branch, and the object of this book is to continue that descent in a narrative form; to relate any interesting incidents of people or history of places mentioned in the former book, thus bringing those characters of bygone centuries into closer relationship with the present genera tion; and to give a little explanation and description of the ancestral pictures included in the illustrations of this book.
