Book Description
Excerpt from Contributions to Old English Lexicography According to the explanation in Lye's preface the reference jeifr. Gl.' means Elfrici glossm'ium ad calcem a'iotionarzi Gut. Somneri, ' but this is not quite correct. It is true, i.e. That Az'tfr. Gt, p. Does refer to the Rubens glossary printed at the end of Somner wv. 104 the number being that of the page in S., but the simple reference Aflfr. Gt. Without a number, or Elfr. Gl. Followed by a number but no p, ' means Elfric's glossary ww. 304-337 pp. 297 Thus, for instance, deaifellen 100, [elfin does not occur at all in the Rubens glossary, but corresponds to \vw. 328 13. Lye's R. Refers to ms. Junius 71 (the copy of the Rubens glosses made by J unius, whence Somner printed them). Book Description
Anglo-Saxon lexicography studies Latin texts and words. The earliest English lexicographers are largely unidentifiable students, teachers, scholars and missionaries. Materials brought from abroad by early teachers were augmented by their teachings and passed on by their students. Lexicographical material deriving from the early Canterbury school remains traceable in glossaries throughout this period, but new material was constantly added. Aldhelm and Ælfric Bata, among others, wrote popular, much studied hermeneutic texts using rare, exotic words, often derived from glossaries, which then contributed to other glossaries. Ælfric of Eynsham is a rare identifiable early English lexicographer, unusual in his lack of interest in hermeneutic vocabulary. The focus is largely on context and the process of creation and intended use of glosses and glossaries. Several articles examine intellectual centres where scholars and texts came together, for example, Theodore and Hadrian in Canterbury; Aldhelm in Malmesbury; Dunstan at Christ Church, Canterbury; Æthelwold in Winchester; King Æthelstan's court; Abingdon; Glastonbury; and Worcester.

Book Description
With the decline of formalism and its predilection for Old English poetry, Old English prose is leaving the periphery and moving into the center of literary and cultural discussion. The extensive corpus of Old English prose lends many texts of various kinds to the current debates over literary theory and its multiple manifestations. The purpose of this collection is to assist the growing interest in Old English prose by providing essays that help establish the foundations for considered study and offer models and examples of special studies. Both retrospective and current in its examples, this collection can serve as a "first book" for an introduction to study, particularly suitable for courses that seek to entertain such issues as authorship, texts and textuality, source criticism, genre, and forms of historical criticism as a significant part of a broad, cultural teaching (and research) plan.
