Book Description
Excerpt from Alcohol and the Human Race In 1908 the Legislature of Alabama, after enacting a Prohibition statute, submitted a Prohibition Amendment to the State constitution as a referendum to be voted on by the people early the following year. I was then a member of Congress from that State. My political advisers, in whose wisdom I had confidence, urged me to come out against the Amendment, as most of the men in public life in the State were doing, and I had about decided to follow their advice, for, though taught in childhood to be abstemious, eighteen years of life in the United States Navy and the superficial observation of an average man of the world, had led me to look upon the liquor question as a mere matter of police regulation which would be out of place in the organic law. The thought that my mother, if alive, would have been for the Amendment, led me to decide, before announcing myself, to make an investigation as to whether any issue of a deep abiding nature, fit for incorporation in the organic law of a state, were involved. Book Description
Excerpt from The Temperance Movement, or the Conflict Between Man and Alcohol The conflict between man and alcohol is as old as civiliza tion, more destructive than any other form of warfare, and as fierce to-day as at any time since the beginning. It is not an exaggeration to say that no other evil known in human history has been of such vast proportions and lamentable consequences as that of alcoholic intemperance. As the whole past of the race has been cursed by it, so its whole future is threatened with increasing calamity, unless there be a period put to its ravages. It is a peculiarity of this curse that it is developed by civilization, and then, like the parricide, it destroys the source of its own life. But although alcohol is his special foe, it by no means confines its dagger and chalice to civilized man. Combining with the spirit of'a mercenary commerce, this active essence of evil is hunting and extirpating the weaker races and indigenous populations of uncivilized countries from the face of the earth. The object of this book is, if possible, to arrest the atten tion of the American, if of no other people; to place before them the leading facts which enter into the great debate now pending on our own and the European continents, and to assist man, however feebly, in this great struggle with alcohol for his life. Book Description
Excerpt from Alcohol: Its Action on the Human Organism The absence of any authoritative work is perhaps partly accounted for by the fact that many of the essential data are not known even to science. A large amount of laborious experiment has, indeed, been directed to certain aspects of the action of alcohol; but the choice of questions for investigation has often been determined by the ease with which they could be put to the test, or by their bearing on some theoretical controversy, rather than by their intrinsic and practical importance. There are many points concerning the use of alcohol in daily life on which research has been so inadequate that knowledge with regard to them is both scanty and imperfect. Book Description
A New York Times Notable Book of 2014 We are doomed to repeat history if we fail to learn from it, but how are we affected by the forces that are invisible to us? What role does Neanderthal DNA play in our genetic makeup? How did the theory of eugenics embraced by Nazi Germany first develop? How is trust passed down in Africa, and silence inherited in Tasmania? How are private companies like Ancestry.com uncovering, preserving and potentially editing the past? In The Invisible History of the Human Race, Christine Kenneally reveals that, remarkably, it is not only our biological history that is coded in our DNA, but also our social history. She breaks down myths of determinism and draws on cutting - edge research to explore how both historical artefacts and our DNA tell us where we have come from and where we may be going.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Whole Truth About Alcohol The book, which I hope many will enjoy, I beg to introduce to the public. Nevertheless, it contains some things I do not enjoy myself. The author speaks ill of many friends of mine whom he calls reform ers and other extremists. I am no extremist, but mean to be a reformer, and hope to continue to be one; that is why I recommend this book, and trust I shall not be classed with those whom my friend, Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
