Neben Aspekten des historischen Wissens werden auf der Grundlage einer quantitativen Befragung die Haltungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern in der Sekundarstufe I (Neue Mittelschule) erforscht. Dabei ergeben sich vor allem durch einen Vergleich mit den Sichtweisen der Lehrerinnen und Lehrer besondere Einblicke in den Umgang mit der NS-Vergangenheit in unserer Gegenwart. Auf diese Weise gelingt es, Holocaust-Education in Österreich exemplarisch unter die Lupe zu nehmen und nach Konsequenzen für den Geschichtsunterricht zu fragen. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Geschichte Deutschlands - Nachkriegszeit, Kalter Krieg, Note: 1,3, Technische Universität Chemnitz (Institut für Europäische Geschichte), Veranstaltung: Erinnerungskultur im Wandel, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Behandlung von Auschwitz als Stätte der Erinnerung impliziert bereits bekannte Fakten wie die industrielle Vernichtung von über einer Million Menschen, wobei die Vernichtung der Juden in heutigen Nachschlagewerken insbesondere hervorgehoben wird. Das Konzentrationslager Auschwitz als Tat der Nationalsozialisten hervorzuheben, lässt einen weiträumigen Horizont der Betrachtung zu: Auschwitz symbolisiert hierbei den gesamten Vernichtungsapparat des Dritten Reiches unter dem Führer Adolf Hitler. In diese gerade allegorische Sichtweise inbegriffen sind damit auch alle anderen Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager der Deutschen sowie die seit Mitte der 1930er organisierte Hetze gegen Minderheiten wie Polen und Juden. Symbol der Politik der Verfolgung und industriellen Ausrottung stellt aufgrund der hohen Zahl der Opfer eben dieses Lager Auschwitz dar. Ähnliche Anstalten wie Belzec und Chelmno erlangten bis heute keine vergleichbare 'Berühmtheit': „Auschwitz dient [...] als Synonym für das Grauen des Völkermords, als Metapher von Schuld und Verstrickung im Bewußtsein [sic] der Deutschen“. Ein zweites Problem, welches sich vor einer Bearbeitung des Themas stellt, ist die Vielfalt der Erinnerungskulturen in Deutschland seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges: nicht nur in kultureller Hinsicht begannen beide deutsche Staaten, die Bundesrepublik wie die Deutsche Demokratische Republik, eine Eigenart des Gedächtnisses gegenüber der Problematik Auschwitz zu entwickeln. Auch politisch, durch die verschiedentliche Ausrichtung der jeweiligen Staatsformen und -ziele bildeten sich schnell weitreichende Unterschiede in der Aufarbeitung der eigenen, der deutschen, Vergangenheit um Auschwitz. Die Spannweite der Erinnerungskultur in Deutschland ist demnach überaus facettenreich. Durch verschiedene Auslegungen der Geschehnisse, durch neuere und ältere Deutungen sowie durch Vergessen und Geschichtsverfälschung entsteht ein für Deutschland sehr mannigfaches Bild einer Erinnerungskultur um Auschwitz. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat die kritische Darlegung der seit 1945 herausgebildeten Bildern der Erinnerung zum Ziel. Jeweilige Eigenheiten und Kontroversen der vielgestaltigen Erinnerungslandschaft sollen darin hervorgehoben und hinterfragt werden. Gleichzeitig sollen auch die Schnittpunkte zeitlicher oder örtlicher Kontinuitäten der Erinnerungskultur in den Blick genommen werden.

The year 2016 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of statutory teaching and learning about the Holocaust in English state-maintained schools, which was introduced with the first English National Curriculum in 1991. The year 2016 also saw the publication of the largest empirical research study on Holocaust education outcomes – the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education’s What Do Students Know and Understand About the Holocaust? This book presents a systematic reflection on the outcomes of this quarter-century of Holocaust education in England and the Centre’s wider work to reflect on the forms and the limitations of children’s knowledge about the Holocaust and of English Holocaust education resources. These papers are then contextualised in two ways: through papers that situate English Holocaust education historiographically and in England’s wider Holocaust culture; and through papers from America, Switzerland, and Germany that place the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education’s findings in a wider and comparative perspective. In the face of an outpouring of research on Holocaust history, Holocaust Angst takes an innovative approach. It explores how Germans perceived and reacted to how Americans publicly commemorated the Holocaust. It argues that a network of mostly conservative West German officials and their associates in private organizations and foundations, with Chancellor Kohl located at its center, perceived themselves as the "victims" of the afterlife of the Holocaust in America. They were concerned that public manifestations of Holocaust memory, such as museums, monuments, and movies, could severely damage the Federal Republic's reputation and even cause Americans to question the Federal Republic's status as an ally. From their perspective, American Holocaust memorial culture constituted a stumbling block for (West) German-American relations since the late 1970s. Providing the first comprehensive, archival study of German efforts to cope with the Nazi past vis-à-vis the United States up to the 1990s, this book uncovers the fears of German officials-some of whom were former Nazis or World War II veterans-about the impact of Holocaust memory on the reputation of the Federal Republic and reveals their at times negative perceptions of American Jews. Focusing on a variety of fields of interaction, ranging from the diplomatic to the scholarly and public spheres, the book unearths the complicated and often contradictory process of managing the legacies of genocide on an international stage. West German decision makers realized that American Holocaust memory was not an "anti-German plot" by American Jews and acknowledged that they could not significantly change American Holocaust discourse. In the end, German confrontation with American Holocaust memory contributed to a more open engagement on the part of the West German government with this memory and eventually rendered it a "positive resource" for German self-representation abroad. Holocaust Angst offers new perspectives on postwar Germany's place in the world system as well as the Holocaust culture in the United States and the role of transnational organizations.

How do schools worldwide treat the Holocaust as a subject? In which countries does the Holocaust form part of classroom teaching? Are representations of the Holocaust always accurate, balanced and unprejudiced in curricula and textbooks? This study, carried out by UNESCO and the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, compares for the first time representations of the Holocaust in school textbooks and national curricula. Drawing on data which includes countries in which there exists no or little information about representations of the Holocaust, the study shows where the Holocaust is established in official guidelines, and contains a close textbook study, focusing on the comprehensiveness and accuracy of representations and historical narratives. The book highlights evolving practices worldwide and thus provides education stakeholders with comprehensive documentation about current trends in curricula directives and textbook representations of the Holocaust. It further formulates recommendations that will help policy-makers provide the educational means by which pupils may develop Holocaust literacy.
