Book Description
Excerpt from Tributes to the Memory of Martin Luther Luther and the Bible, etc; The tributes in this part are arranged, as near as possible, in chronological order of their authors. Part II. Contains a few of the many editorials with which periodicals were teeming these past memorial months. We have confined ourself almost exclusively to religious papers in our selection, appending but a few from the secular press. It will be seen that non Lutheran organs have even surpassed in glowing tribute those Of the Lutheran Church. This accounts for so slim a representation of the best Lutheran Jour nals Of our land. Part III. IS a fair showing of what prominent Amer ican divines and other eminent men have said in various parts Of our land. With but a single exception (that Of Rev. C. H. Spurgeon), these last two parts are' entirely composed of American tributes. The foreign press dispatch showed what laurel-wreaths could be constructed from the flowers that bloomed this year in Germany, which in the product Of Luther honor was closely followed by all other civilized and Protestant nations. Germany, however, took the lead, Where Luther's battle had been fought, and where his glorious Battle-hymn this year made the rafters roar from Hamburg to Bohemia. We regret that we were obliged to abbreviate some of the beautiful encomiums sent in, and to omit others altogether, since not bearing exactly on the point for which we had solicited. We regret also having been compelled to break these tributes away from theirconnection, in which they fitted like jewels in settings Of gold.' But we have, in most instances, indicated the source from which they were taken; there the reader can find these gems in all their casements Of connected thought. Book Description
In this “handsome photo-essay . . . family members across generations and a few close friends remember the man they knew as ‘M. L.’” (Booklist). Martin Luther King Jr.’s family comes together for the first time to share their reflections and memories of the great civil rights leader in this touching and intimate volume. Included are contributions from his sister (the only surviving member of his immediate family), his children, his in-laws, his nieces and nephews, and even his grandchildren, who, although they never met him, explain what his legacy means to them. Unlike the iconic persona of statues and portraits, the book presents a loving view of the man who used to sneaking naps during holiday meals and playing games with his nieces and nephews. Alongside these tributes are never-before-published family photos of Dr. King, as well as new photographs of the memorial dedicated to him in August 2011 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Book Description
In 1983, Ronald Reagan signed into law a federal holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Three years later, the holiday was first formally observed by the federal government. In response to the growing number of musical celebrations surrounding the holiday, Anthony McDonald published in 1996 the first edition of The Catalog of Music Written in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Now, more than a decade since its second edition in 1999, McDonald presents his definitive third edition of the catalog. McDonald organizes information on music suitable for concert performances by symphony orchestras, school music departments, church choirs, or solo performers, including works that celebrate not only Martin Luther King Day, but Black History Month as well. His selections comprise musical work written to honor King, as well as other Americans engaged in the struggle for equality and freedom such as Abraham Lincoln, Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and John F. Kennedy. McDonald also incorporates works that more broadly address African American history and culture, such as William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony. This third edition contains a considerable number of revisions, updates, and new work and includes entirely new sections devoted to jazz and blues songs, sample programs of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day concerts, and a discography, along with appendixes of works listed by orchestration, subject, and a list of publishers and sources. A Catalog of Music Written in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. is the ideal tool for symphony orchestras, choruses, music departments, and other performing groups and organizations seeking to present concerts that celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., his legacy, and African American history more broadly.

Book Description
US Public Memory, Rhetoric, and the National Mall examines “the nation’s front yard,” understanding it as both a public face the United States presents to the world and a site where its less apparent moral story is told. This book provides a uniquely thorough, interdisciplinary, and integrated examination of how the National Mall shares a moral story of the United States and, in so doing, reveals the soul of the nation. The contributors explore 11 different memorials, monuments, and museums found across the Mall, considering how each rhetorically remembers a key element of the nation’s past, what the rhetorical memory tells us about the nation’s soul, and how each site must thus be understood in relation to the commemorative landscape of the Mall.

Book Description
Martin Luther - monk, priest, intellectual, or revolutionary - has been a controversial figure since the sixteenth century. Most studies of Luther stress his personality, his ideas, and his ambitions as a church reformer. In this book, Christopher Ocker brings a new perspective to this topic, arguing that the different ways people thought about Luther mattered far more than who he really was. Providing an accessible, highly contextual, and non-partisan introduction, Ocker says that religious conflict itself served as the engine of religious change. He shows that the Luther affair had a complex political anatomy which extended far beyond the borders of Germany, making the debate an international one from the very start. His study links the Reformation to pluralism within western religion and to the coexistence of religions and secularism in today's world. Luther, Conflict, and Christendom includes a detailed chronological chart.

Book Description
The 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 focuses the mind on the history and significance of Protestant forms of Christianity. It also prompts the question of how the Reformation has been commemorated on past anniversary occasions. In an effort to examine various meanings attributed to Protestantism, this book recounts and analyzes major commemorative occasions, including the famous posting of the 95 Theses in 1517 or the birth and death dates of Martin Luther, respectively 1483 and 1546. Beginning with the first centennial jubilee in 1617, Remembering the Reformation: An Inquiry into the Meanings of Protestantism makes its way to the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's birth, internationally marked in 1983. While the book focuses on German-speaking lands, Thomas Albert Howard also looks at Reformation commemorations in other countries, notably in the United States. The central argument is that past commemorations have been heavily shaped by their historical moment, exhibiting confessional, liberal, nationalist, militaristic, Marxist, and ecumenical motifs, among others.
