Excerpt from The History of the Parish and Manor of Wookey: Being a Contribution Towards a Future History of the County of Somerset One remark it is necessary to make on the spelling of the names of the inhabitants. In the first of the two indices, every name is placed in its proper position according to its spelling. It must not be supposed that on this account I regard the various spellings as denoting various persons. If I had stopped at some particular time, I might have come to some decision on the spelling, and made that spelling uniform through the book. But this I found to be more difficult than I cared to undertake, and especially so since we go on from our earlier notices down to the present day. I have therefore adhered to this rule, that wherever I quoted a document I gave the exact spelling of the name in that document, and I leave to the reader the duty of deciding whether the contemporary varieties of names belong to one or to different individuals. In hardly any case will a difficulty arise. It is vain to regret that my information was not fuller and more perfect. No one would have rejoiced more than the writer had it been so and yet what is here recorded proves that even a little country village has a history which is worth knowing, and therefore worth writing. Excerpt from The Place Names of Stirlingshire The first edition of this little book was very limited, and was all sold out within six weeks. The writer is grateful for the very kindly and appreciative way in which it was received both by the press as a whole, and by private readers. But the first edition had many imperfections, and the writer is glad to have the Opportunity of presenting his work in this much enlarged and improved form. The Introduction has been carefully revised, but the chief alterations and additions will be found in the appended List of Names. In its revision the writer has drawn largely from the Valuation Roll, and has enjoyed the skilled assistance of Mr. John Cameron, of Ullapool, a Gaelic scholar of repute, who has helped him to adjust not a few grammatical nice ties, which vexed the righteous soul of the scholarly Gael; but for all Opinions expressed in this book the writer alone is responsible. It should also be understood that sometimes, of set purpose, he has not spelt Gaelic names as they would be spelt to-day, because it seemed evident that, in some cases, things have changed in the 500 or 600 years which have passed since Gaelic ceased to be spoken in the most of Stirlingshire. Excerpt from Worcestershire Place Names Nearly all English place-names have their root in anglo-saxon the principal exceptions are rivers and hills, which frequently maintain their earlier names (especially large rivers), and then their construction is almost hopeless. On the west side of Severn a few names appear to be of Welsh origin (e. G. Malvern, Mathon, Pendock, Pensax, and should therefore be dealt with by a Welsh scholar. Before commencing my work I was of opinion that the Norsemen had left no permanent traces of their invasions in Worcestershire but I now think it pretty clear they made a settlement in the neighbourhood of Clent and Hagley, probably on one of their raids up Severn. The same thing happened in North Staffordshire, where several place-names and words are clearly of Danish origin. The anglo-saxons appear to have been a homely race, for their place-names have the simplest origins, very different to the Welsh, Irish, and Scotch, whose names largely savour of poetry, sentiment, and history.
