Book Description
Strindberg called these five highly original late works (from 1907) chamber plays to remind us of Beethoven's last quartets. Like the quartets, they are intensely disciplined yet elliptical creations, Written for the Intimate Theatre (founded with August Flack), they strive to reach elusive states of being. Strindberg breaks down for us the barriers between sensory perception and fantasy, between real people and their self-projections, between the living and the dead.

Book Description
Drama. Translated from the Swedish by Paul Walsh. THE CHAMBER PLAYS OF AUGUST STRINDBERG are five short plays written by Strindberg at the end of his career for the Intimate Theater, a small 150 seat theater in Stockholm: "Storm," "Burned House," "The Ghost Sonata," "The Pelican," and "The Black Glove." The plays experiment with style in bold and exciting ways and show Strindberg to be one of the fathers of avant garde theater. THE CHAMBER PLAYS OF AUGUST STRINDBERG is a new translation by Paul Walsh, Professor of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism at the Yale School of Drama.

Book Description
This copiously annotated bibliography documents and examines the whole range of commentary on Strindberg's works and activity in many fields besides the plays for which he is internationally best known. These include his prose fiction and poetry, his work as an historian and natural historian, and his relationship to the other arts, most notably his painting. It is concerned with both lasting works of literary and dramatic criticism, as well as reviews of his books and plays in the theatre, and some more ephemeral material, all of this in several languages. Organised generically and by subject and individual work, the bibliography enables the reader to trace the changing impact of Strindberg and his works in various countries and during different periods. It is thus very much a study in reception as well as a bibliographical record of published material. It traces the developing image of Strindberg and his writing both during his lifetime and in subsequent years, and with frequent cross reference offers a comprehensive overview of a literary and existential project that has rarely been matched for its multifaceted diversity. The bibliography is published in three parts. Volume 1, General Studies (978-0-947623-81-4) and Volume 3, Prose, Poetry, Miscellaneous (978-0-947623-83-8) are also now available. Michael Robinson is Emeritus Professor of Drama and Scandinavian Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.

Book Description
Includes the plays Miss Julie, The Father, The Comrades and Creditors Miss Julie is Strindberg’s best known play, a naturalistic drama about an affair which involves a brutal struggle for ascendancy between the two sexes and two classes. The Father, an almost entirely one-sided rage against the power of women over men, is also a plea for the feminine side of a man’s nature. The Comrades portrays artists living in Paris in what they consider to be a modern ‘bohemian’ marriage. In Creditors, Strindberg is in rare comic form, describing how a woman’s ex-husband gains her new husband’s confidences, only to destroy him and his faith in his wife in one afternoon. Cast sizes are 3+, 8, 3, and 11 respectively.

Book Description
In recent research, there has been growing emphasis on the collaborative, social, and collective nature of musical behaviour and practices. Among the emerging hypotheses in this connection are the idea that listening to music is always listening together and being with the other; that music making is a matter of intercorporeality, mutuality, and emphatic attunement; and that creative agency in musical practices is fundamentally a distributed phenomenon. Chamber music provides an ideal context for the testing and actualization of these notions. This Special Issue on chamber music and the chamber musician aims to explore the psychological, social, cultural, historical, and artistic issues in the practice of classical chamber music in the twenty-first century. Contributions are invited on any of these aspects and issues involved in being a contemporary classical chamber musician. Authors are encouraged to contextualise their research by reference to the recent literature on collaborative musicking, and among the topics they may choose to address are the cultural and musical demands chamber musicians face and the implications of these demands for their artistic practice, the ways the twenty-first-century chamber musicians engage with historical practices, the newly emerging musical identities and artistic roles available to them, and expressivity in current chamber music practices.
