Excerpt from An Arabic-English Vocabulary of the Colloquial Arabic of Egypt: Containing the Vernacular Idioms and Expressions, Slang Phrases, Etc., Etc., Used by Native Egyptians But it was not until 1891 that he began to collect his materials. His plan at first was to compile a simple book of some two hundred pages, but as the work progressed he found that it was gradually growing larger until at last its size as originally contemplated was greatly increased. Finding this to be the case, the compiler decided to give the book a wider scope, and for this purpose he introduced a large number of administrative, financial, engineering, mechanical and military words which he met with in his perusal of a mass of official publications. The idioms and the slang phrases were obtained not only by reading almost all the literature of which colloquial Arabic can boast, but by listening and carefully noting casual words and trivial phrases as they were used in common conversation. Excerpt from The Arab Conquest of Egypt and the Last Thirty Years of the Roman Dominion For this book, so far as its purpose is concerned, perhaps no apology is needed. It aims at constructing a history, at once broad and detailed, of the Saracen conquest of Egypt. No such history has yet been written, although scattered essays on the subject may be found from Gibbon onwards - brief sketches or chapters in some wider treatise upon the Roman or the Arab empire. Indeed the fact that no serious and minute study upon the conquest exists in any language is not a little remarkable: but it has been mainly due to two causes - the scantiness of the material accessible to ordinary students, and the total want of agreement among the authorities, familiar or unfamiliar, eastern or western. The subject consequently has been wrapped in profound obscurity; to enter upon it was to enter a gloomy labyrinth of contradictions. This may seem exaggerated language: but it is no more than the truth, and it is borne out by the opinion of a very well-known writer, Mr. E. W. Brooks, who says: 'There is scarcely any important event in history of which the accounts are so vague and so discrepant as the capture of Alexandria. The whole history of the irruption of the Saracens into the [Roman] empire is indeed dark and obscure: but of all the events of this dark period the conquest of Egypt is the darkest.' Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
