Book Description
Excerpt from Historic Christianity and the Apostles Creed The first part of the book was prepared for three Sunday addresses in St. Margaret's, Westminster, during June, 1918; the third I was prevented from delivering, but all appeared in the Guardian whence by the courtesy of the Editor they are reprinted, substantially in their original form. The addresses on the Apostles' Creed were given in Great St. Mary's, Cambridge, during Lent, 1919; the development of thought is essentially the same, but identity does not extend further. Book Description
Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: In the Light of Modern Discussion If, as is more than ever probable, the faith of the first century is to be the faith of the twentieth century, many troubled souls will be immensely comforted. We are witnessing this remarkable phenomenon; the oldest extant Christian Confession that has any completeness is rapidly and widely finding a new acceptance. It is heard to-day in public worship upon more lips than any form of words outside the Bible. The title, "The Apostles' Creed," need trouble no one. The origin of the Creed is unknown; although it has undergone some slight modifications, it has so simple and compact a unity as to indicate that it was struck out at a single heat. It is a crystallization of the Christian faith, as that faith, passing out of the dry and narrow atmosphere of Jerusalem, came to self-consciousness in the more liberal and cosmopolitan atmosphere of Antioch. It is in this sense the Creed of an apostle, i. e., of a man who has a message because he has something that he believes. It is for all time because it is triumphant and not defensive; it is conscious of no enemies; it joyfully affirms. Book Description
Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed in the Twentieth Century The creed seems to have arisen progressively in the early Church until it assumed its present form as a spontaneous confession of the truths preached by the Apostles and their successors. The real Apostolic Succession is not only of preachers but specially of preaching. What would be the spontaneous confession of the whole Church to-day of the truths now being preached in its pulpits is a crucial question.
