Book Description
President of the newly founded Old Spanish Trail (OST) National Association, Kessler states, "The OST may be the most important trail of all. Perhaps neither the Santa Fe nor the Oregon Trails would have developed had the means of transportation not been made available. It was the horse & mule trade on the OST that brought these animals from California to Missouri to facilitate the settling of the West." The OST wove through six states, linking Santa Fe, NM to Los Angeles, CA. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell has noted the trail's importance by promoting (in 1995) a bill to designate the OST as a National Trail. This traveler's guidebook gives an exciting & detailed look at this lesser-known portion of the OST. RETRACING will specify highways that parallel the OST & visit sites where wagon ruts are still visible. Stories & legends abound with many suggestions for "things-to-see!" Whether a weekend or an extended outing is planned, RETRACING can help fill every moment. To order contact: Adobe Village Press, P.O. Box 510, Monte Vista, CO 81144. 719-852-5225.

Book Description
Who does this land belong to? How have cultures gained access to this land? Who gets to decide who is right? These are the questions that inspired Nash to write this book. Although in recent decades, there have been significant studies and reports on the history of San Luis Valley and, more generally, the southwestern United States, this intriguing story is largely unknown to many residents. More importantly, most of the history commonly known is told by those that won the valley from several previous inhabitants and cultures. This work gives a prominent place to the stories as told by indigenous people and Spanish-speaking people before the arrival of northern European descendants. Nash draws from a wide variety of sources to bring a condensed version of this broader story.

Book Description
Little is known about the fifth and last western expedition of the celebrated explorer John Charles Frémont. The great effort to survey a transcontinental railway route across the 38th parallel ended short of success in the snows of Utah in 1854 but involved a meticulous photographic documentation -- in daguerreotypes -- of the route from the Mississippi westward. It was believed that a central railroad across the country would favour abolitionists in the great debate then raging in the country over slavery. Solomon Nunes Carvalho was hired by Frémont to photograph the expedition -- the first time a western expeditionary survey had been systematically documented in photographs. Tragically, the daguerreotypes were destroyed by fire, and Frémont's fifth expedition was lost to history. Author and daguerreotypist Robert Shlaer remarkably has reconstructed the expedition in 120 original daguerreotypes. Using Frémont's maps, expedition documents, and Carvalho's diary accounts, Shlaer recreates the lost expedition across America's most breathtaking landscape using photography's first and most venerable method of daguerreotypye.

Book Description
This is a survey of the major historic trails of New Mexico and other parts of the American Southwest. These trails were used by Indians, prospectors, soldiers, buffalo hunters, immigrants, and cattle and sheep drovers, and, unlike other, more famous Western trails, were used as a network of two-way trade routes instead of one-way avenues for westward migration. Introductory chapters highlight prehistoric Indian trails, Spanish exploration, and Pecos as a microcosm of the old Southwest. Each subsequent chapter covers an individual trail, describing its history and some of the people who used it. A chronology of New Mexico's history and trail system is included, as are maps of the most important trails.
