They are employed simply as the best or the most appro priate phrases to describe or to account for those exceptionally brilliant acts or deeds in the lives of some great Ameri cans, as set forth in the following pages, and the writer trusts that they will be so accepted and understood by the reader. The writer had long entertained the idea that a work of this kind, if kept within proper limits and avoiding super. fluous detail, might not be unacceptable to the general reader, as a sort of artificial memory of the greatest, at least of some of the greatest, events in American his tory.
