The majority of cattle breeds in Europe are native or local breeds, usually characterised by a limited geographical distribution. The breeds have significant potential as they are carrying large amounts of genetic variation and have important cultural, historical, socio-economic and environmental values. 'Local cattle is living inheritance, old germplasm which shouldn't get lost', said one farmer. These breeds were once regionally the most popular ones, now many of them are 'at risk'. Hence, there is a need to (further) develop effective policies and strategies at national and European level to conserve and develop local cattle breeds and to promote their branded use. The European local cattle populations were a target in the EURECA project, co-funded by the European Commission. The aim was to better understand the state of the breeds, to identify factors that contribute to their success or failure and to recommend decision-making tools for development of ambitious and sound strategies and policies. With this full colour publication we share the methodology and give a comprehensive view on European local cattle breeds. We hope that our findings and recommendations will contribute to the development of successful future strategies for local cattle breeds in Europe. Local or autochthonous pig breeds represent a pool of genetic diversity of porcine species and a link with old-style traditional production systems and traditional pork products. These breeds were largely abandoned because they were not competitive in the concept of modern, industrial type of pig production. This study undertakes an examination of socio-economic factors affecting the adoption of European (improved ) breeds of dairy cattle by small scale farmers in southern Kakamega, Kenya. The factors assessed included the nature of these dairy breeds, (Friesians, Guernseys, Ayrshires and Jerseys) compared to that of indigenous cattle, the resource base on these farms, the nature of the farmers and extension services available to farmers in Kakamega district. The theory of the process of adoption of a new innovation provides the framework for this study. The study is important because there is a definite need for increased milk production in this densely populated and milk deficit area. The major objective of the study was to determine the reasons why farmers in southern Kakamega have been slow in adopting improved dairy breeds of cattle. The study uses both survey and published data. The survey data were obtained from a formal oral interview of thirteen adopters and forty non-adopters of improved dairy cattle. The published data were mainly from the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Livestock Development. The results of the study show that a number of economic and technical factors appear to have discouraged the adoption of improved cattle breeds in the area. Improved dairy breeds which have been imported into lowlands areas of Kakamega from the cool, high altitude areas of Kenya have been more susceptible to diseases and heat stress and do not appear to withstand the low levels of feed intake compared to the local zebu cattle. Consequently, many farmers in this area did not seem to perceive substantial net benefits from adopting improved cattle. Another set of factors which have discouraged the adoption of improved cattle breeds is the narrow resource base of farmers in the region. The average farm size was about 5 acres and much of the land was allocated to food crops for family consumption and to cash crops. Improved dairy cattle competed for the limited resources on these farms, while local cattle were complementary and supplementary in the use of resources. In addition, most farmers and hired workers did not have the formal schooling or farmer training required to manage improved cattle satisfactorily. A third set of factors which have slowed the adoption of improved cattle was the inadequate extension services at the farm level concerning general dairy management, disease control and artificial insemination. One recommendation of this study is that a research program should be undertaken to develop an appropriate dairy breed which is suitable to the conditions of farmers in this region. Also, it is suggested that a research program should be undertaken to develop relevant recommendations for the management of local cattle. A third recommendation is that better training and extension services should be provided to dairy farmers in the Kakamega region.

This book brings together recent and ongoing empirical studies to examine two relational kinds of politics, namely, the politics of nature, i.e. how nature conservation projects are sites on which power relations play out, and the politics of the scientific study of nature. These are discussed in their historical and present contexts, and at specific sites on which particular human-environment relations are forged or contested. This spatio-temporal juxtaposition is lacking in current research on political ecology while the politics of science appears marginal to critical scholarship on social nature. Specifically, the book examines power relations in nature-related activities, demonstrates conditions under which nature and science are politicised, and also accounts for political interests and struggles over nature in its various forms. The ecological, socio-political and economic dimensions of nature cannot be ignored when dealing with present-day environmental issues. Nature conservation regulations are concerned with the management of flora and fauna as much as with humans. Various chapters in the book pay attention to the ways in which nature, science and politics are interrelated and also co-constitutive of each other. They highlight that power relations are naturalised through science and science-related institutions and projects such as museums, botanical gardens, wetlands, parks and nature reserves.
