"The first twelve months of the Korean War (June 1950-June 1951) had been characterized by dramatic changes in the battlefront as the opposing armies swept up and down the length of the Korean peninsula. This war of movement virtually ended on 10 July 1951, when representatives from the warring parties met in a restaurant in Kaesong to negotiate an end to the war. Although the two principal parties to the conflict -- the governments of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (ROK or South Korea) -- were more than willing to fight to the death, their chief patrons -- The People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union the one hand and the United States and the United Nations (UN) on the other -- were not. Twelve months of bloody fighting had convinced Mao Tse-tung, Joseph V. Stalin, and Harry S. Truman that it was not longer in their respective national interests to try and win a total victory in Korea. The costs in terms of men and materiel were too great, as were the risks that the conflict might escalate into a wider, global conflagration. Many combat veterans refuse to discuss their experiences on the line. With the passage of time and the unreliability of memory, it becomes difficult to understand the true nature of war. In The Line: Combat in Korea, January--February 1951, retired Army colonel William T. Bowers uses firsthand, eyewitness accounts of the Korean War to offer readers an intimate look at the heroism and horror of the battlefront. These interviews of soldiers on the ground are particularly telling because they were conducted by Army historians immediately following combat. Known as the "forgotten war," the action in Korea lasted from June 1950 until July 1953 and was particularly savage for its combatants. Included in FORGOTTEN SOLDIERS FROM OUR FORGOTTEN WAR are 30 letters written and sent between May 1951 and May 1953. Twenty-Eight of them were sent to newlyweds Frank and Mary Gossett where they lived in New York's Washington Heights. Two of them were sent to army soldier CPL Edward F. (Eddie) Hines somewhere in Korea. Nine men and women, between the ages of 16 and 22, sent these letters. They called themselves the "gang" in their letters, but they were just young people dealing with the uncertainty of a country at war and knowing they may pay the price with their lives and sanity. These letters and a few more were kept in a tin canister in Frank Gossett's closet for over 60 years. These letters are a testament to his earnest efforts and struggles and those of his family and friends at a very troubling time in our country.
