Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Adolescent Education This small book lays no claim to be a comprehensive work on adolescent education; many volumes would be required to do full justice to the complexity and importance of the subject dealt with. The object of these few chapters is not to be comprehensive, but rather suggestive. At the risk of wearisome repetition much stress has been laid on the pathological symptoms of adolescent development, and also on the evil and unnatural tendencies which are so strikingly characteristic of some who have the care of boys or girls in large numbers. Such subjects cannot be ignored in the study of adolescence, and, since in the past they have been so carefully and so unwisely avoided, they can hardly receive at present too mush quiet scientific attention. We are realizing that many schools offences are due to the fact that the delinquents have had no share in the making of the laws which they have broken, and have taken no part in the discussion which has preceded their enactment. On a fuller recognition of this psychological fact much of the future evolution of our educational theory depends. Book Description
Excerpt from Education During Adolescence: Based Partly on G. Stanley Hall's Psychology of Adolescence We must bear in mind that interest is the very Holy Ghost of education and that so-called formal studies and methods of discipline are only, for the most part, a delusion and a snare. They make degenerate mental tissue. It is not culture to learn to speak or write well upon trivial or indefinite subjects but rather to keep up with the great human interests, which will come to expression spontaneously if they are given a fair chance to do so. Even our educational psychology is for the most part antiquated. It lives, moves, and has its being in a pre-evolutionary age, and was, with a few striking exceptions, developed by those who had no knowledge of the wonderful advances that had been lately made in our knowledge of the will, feelings, sentiments, and especially of the great surge of racial life that always and everywhere tends to expand the soul of the individual in the teens toward the dimen sions of that of the race. These changes our system in general tends to ignore when they ought, on the contrary, to be more and more stressed.
