This volume argues for an innovative interdisciplinary approach to the analysis and translation of literary style, based on a mutually supportive combination of traditional close reading and ‘distant’ reading, involving corpus-linguistic analysis and text-visualisation. The book contextualizes this approach within the broader story of the development of computer-assisted translation -- including machine translation and the use of CAT tools -- and elucidates the ways in which the approach can lead to better informed translations than those based on close reading alone. This study represents the first systematic attempt to use corpus linguistics and text-visualisation in the process of translating individual literary texts, as opposed to comparing and analysing already published originals and their translations. Using the case study of his translation into English of Uruguayan author Mario Benedetti’s 1965 novel Gracías por el Fuego, Youdale showcases how a close and distant reading approach (CDR) enhances the translator’s ability to detect and measure a variety of stylistic features, ranging from sentence length and structure to lexical richness and repetition, both in the source text and in their own draft translation, thus assisting them with the task of revision. The book reflects on the benefits and limitations of a CDR approach, its scalability and broader applicability in translation studies and related disciplines, making this key reading for translators, postgraduate students and scholars in the fields of literary translation, corpus linguistics, corpus stylistics and narratology.

Computers offer new perspectives in the study of language, allowing us to see phenomena that previously remained obscure because of the limitations of our vantage points. It is not uncommon for computers to be likened to the telescope, or microscope, in this respect. In this pioneering computer-assisted study of translation, Dorothy Kenny suggests another image, that of the kaleidoscope: playful changes of perspective using corpus-processing software allow textual patterns to come into focus and then recede again as others take their place. And against the background of repeated patterns in a corpus, creative uses of language gain a particular prominence. In Lexis and Creativity in Translation, Kenny monitors the translation of creative source-text word forms and collocations uncovered in a specially constructed German-English parallel corpus of literary texts. Computer-assisted translation (CAT) has always used translationmemories, which require the translator to have a corpus of previoustranslations that the CAT software can use to generate bilinguallexicons. This can be problematic when the translator does not havesuch a corpus, for instance, when the text belongs to an emergingfield. To solve this issue, CAT research has looked into theleveraging of comparable corpora, i.e. a set of texts, in two ormore languages, which deal with the same topic but are nottranslations of one another. This work had two primary objectives. The first is to assess theinput of lexicons extracted from comparable corpora in the contextof a specialized human translation task. The second objective is toidentify bilingual-lexicon-extraction methods which best match thetranslators’ needs, determining the current limits of thesetechniques and suggesting improvements. The author focuses, inparticular, on the identification of fertile translations, themanagement of multiple morphological structures, and the ranking ofcandidate translations. The experiments are carried out on two language pairs(English–French and English–German) and on specializedtexts dealing with breast cancer. This research puts significantemphasis on applicability – methodological choices are guidedby the needs of the final users. This book is organized in twoparts: the first part presents the applicative and scientificcontext of the research, and the second part is given over toefforts to improve compositional translation. The research work presented in this book received the PhD Thesisaward 2014 from the French association for natural languageprocessing (ATALA).

Translation studies as a discipline has grown enormously in recent decades. Contributions to the discipline have come from a variety of fields, including machine translation, history, literature, philosophy, linguistics, terminology, signed language interpreting, screen translation, translation pedagogy, software localization and lexicography. There is evidently great diversity in translation studies, but is there much unity? Have the different branches of translation studies become so specialized that they can no longer talk to each other? Would translation studies be strengthened or weakened by the search for or the existence of unifying principles?
