Book Description
Attrition among doctoral students has become a perennial issue in higher education (Gardner, 2009; Golde, 2000) as 40 to 60 percent of doctoral students do not complete their program of study (Bair &Haworth, 2005). Such outcomes are inconsistent with the rigorous evaluation that occurs prior to being accepted into a doctoral program (Bair & Haworth, 2005). Despite deemed levels of student excellence, promise and efforts made by programs to counter student departure (Offerman, 2011), attrition rates remain alarmingly high (Bair & Haworth, 2005; Gardner, 2009). The purpose of this book is to provide a view into doctoral student work-lives and their efforts to find a balance between often seemingly conflicting responsibilities. In addition to contributing to the ongoing dialogue on work-life balance in doctoral studies (Brus, 2006; Golde, 1998; Moyer, Salovey, & Casey-Cannon, 1999), the intention of this book is to provide other doctoral students with potential coping mechanisms, guidance, and assurance that they are not alone in this process. Lastly, we anticipate that these doctoral student narratives will help illuminate potential strategies that doctoral programs, departments, and institutions can incorporate in their efforts to help students successfully complete their program of study. As such the intended audience is doctoral students, higher education professionals, faculty members, and educational leaders.

Book Description
To be fat in a thin-obsessed gay culture can be difficult. Despite affectionate in-group monikers for big gay men–chubs, bears, cubs–the anti-fat stigma that persists in American culture at large still haunts these individuals who often exist at the margins of gay communities. In Fat Gay Men, Jason Whitesel delves into the world of Girth & Mirth, a nationally known social club dedicated to big gay men, illuminating the ways in which these men form identities and community in the face of adversity. In existence for over forty years, the club has long been a refuge and ‘safe space’ for such men. Both a partial insider as a gay man and an outsider to Girth & Mirth, Whitesel offers an insider’s critique of the gay movement, questioning whether the social consequences of the failure to be height-weight proportionate should be so extreme in the gay community. This book documents performances at club events and examines how participants use allusion and campy-queer behavior to reconfigure and reclaim their sullied body images, focusing on the numerous tensions of marginalization and dignity that big gay men experience and how they negotiate these tensions via their membership to a size-positive group. Based on ethnographic interviews and in-depth field notes from more than 100 events at bar nights, café klatches, restaurants, potlucks, holiday bashes, pool parties, movie nights, and weekend retreats, the book explores the woundedness that comes from being relegated to an inferior position in gay hierarchies, and yet celebrates how some gay men can reposition the shame of fat stigma through carnival, camp, and play. A compelling and rich narrative, Fat Gay Men provides a rare glimpse into an unexplored dimension of weight and body image in American culture.

Book Description
My main message is if we fight our own demons, learn to forgive and love ourselves, do and attract the good, then we can reach our inner peace, where all other blessings stem from. When we reach this point, we do not have the need to fight or hurt one another, thus, tolerance, compassion, acceptance, and hopefully, earthly peace. In my book Privileged Grace, previously published as Walking with the Vain Cattle in 2009, I shared through the best truth I knew, my deepest thoughts, emotions, pains, challenges, dreams, gradual healing, evolution, insights, and triumphs which led me to my light. Of course, each of us will have different quests and battles to reach happiness and peace. Mine were mainly dealing with the conformity, banality, mendacity, and evil of our world, such as war, corruption, slander, manipulation, abuse, etc., and to top it, my own ego. This might explain the choice of the previous books title. Simply, this was the diary of my spiritual journey, and I know that this odyssey is still at its beginning. But as any other book, movie, or a piece of theatre, it either brings you laughter and tears, guidance, awareness, realizations, smiles, messages, inspiration, etc., or it doesnt. It is up to you to see it from any point of view you please or simply view its points, and then you can still distort it, if you wish! Thank you for reading me, and hope this book brings you insights and answers, which might help you define and reach your inner light and peace. God bless.

Book Description
Now in its third edition, Beyond a Shadow of a Diet is the most comprehensive book available for professionals working with clients who struggle with binge and emotional eating, chronic dieting, and body image. Divided into three sections—The Problem, The Treatment, and The Solution—this book is filled with compelling clinical examples, visualizations, and exercises that professionals can use to deepen their knowledge and skills as they help clients find freedom from preoccupation with food and weight. New research on diet failure, health, weight, and weight stigma makes a case for why clinicians must reflect on their own attitudes and biases to understand how a weight loss focus can harm clients. In addition to addressing the symptoms, dynamics, and treatment of eating problems, this book presents a holistic framework that includes topics such as cultural, ethical, and social justice issues, the role of self-compassion, and promoting physical and emotional well-being for people of all shapes and sizes. Drawing from the attuned eating and weight inclusive frameworks, this book serves as an essential resource for both new clinicians and those interested in shifting their clinical approach. Trauma-informed and filled with compelling client stories and step-by-step strategies, Beyond a Shadow of a Diet offers professionals and their clients a positive, evidence-based model for making peace with food, their bodies, and themselves.
