It contains on the one hand a critical discussion of their treatment in Latin grammatical studies -- the characteristics attributed to them, their relationship to other words -- and on the other hand a discussion of the conditions that have to be met in order to achieve a better (sub)classification -- general problems of classification as well as criteria for affecting such classification -- and a better description of the functions of adverbs in larger constructions. The study contains, therefore, both language-specific sections and more general ones. The author wrote the passages specifically dealing with Latin in such a way that they are clear enough to the non-Latinist, the more general passages in such a way that they are understandable for Latinists who are not acquainted with recent developments in linguistics.

The objective of this work is to define and establish the class of adverbs in Old Anatolian Turkish (OAT) as a solid grammatical category. In this work, adverbs and adverbials are taken in a wider scope, and the phrasal and syntactic adverbial constructions such as word groups, converbs and adverbial clauses are analyzed for that purpose. Adverbs are treated as a syntactic phenomenon and all analyses are carried out on syntactic contexts in examples of full sentences and sentence groups. Adverbs of degree form an intriguing part of the lexicon: numerous, multiform and everchanging. They also show a great variety in distribution. In this study, the characteristics of adverbs of degree are investigated from a semantic point of view. The main focus is on Dutch, but previous studies about English and German adverbs of degree are used to compare with and to build on. The book starts with an introduction on grading and gradability, and a classification of the adverbs according to the degree they express. Next, the different lexical sources from which the adverbs emerge and the process of grammaticalization are discussed. The main part of the book is devoted to semantic restrictions on the use of adverbs of degree, on the one hand restrictions concerning the modified elements, on the other hand those concerning the environment. Topics include absoluteness versus gradability, positive versus negative evaluation, the strengthening of negation, polarity sensitivity, the logical properties of the adverbs themselves, and restrictions to reduplication and stacking. Besides the main text, three case studies are presented in which the pecularities of some of the adverbs are investigated in depth, to show more in detail to complexities of their distribution. The appendix gives an overview of Dutch adverbs of degree.

This text identifies grammatical constraints on adverbs in multiple areas of language, from morpho-syntax to prosody to semantics. A novel syntactic adverb hierarchy is proposed to explain the distribution of multi-adverb constructions, one which has just five distinct classes. The status of “adverb” as a unique lexical category is also investigated. Readers will learn that, unlike adjectives, adverb ordering restrictions are not predictable based on a single conceptual factor like subjectivity. This book also connects the ordering preferences of adverbs to the meaning and usage of each class of adverbs, as well speaker variation relating to adverb form and pronunciation. Although the book focuses primarily on data from the English language, its findings are predicted to hold cross-linguistically, and would be useful to any linguistic researcher studying adverb distribution.
