Book Description
Are you looking for effective ways to learn Czech? New ways? Do you want to learn words that are useful, and that you will often hear and use? Start learning those that are most frequent! This book draws on A Frequency Dictionary of Czech (Core Vocabulary for Learners) published by Routledge in 2011. In the introduction, the authors say that just 1000 MOST FREQUENT WORDS might account for 85 PER CENT OF SPEECH! The problem is that when you want to learn a word in Czech, especially a verb or a noun, each has many forms, so I’ve decided to write a book that would show these various forms to learners. In addition, you can find some useful phrases where these words are shown “in action”. My plan is to cover all those 1000 most frequent Czech words in the upcoming years, and this is the first publication in that series. WHO IS THE BOOK FOR? I believe this book is suitable for people who have already learnt at least some basics of the Czech language, not for complete beginners. However, I am sure it can be useful for those who have already got to a higher level – they can use it as a reference book, or explore more through the links collected inside. This is not a textbook, and it cannot teach you Czech grammar. It is a handbook, made to show you all the forms of the most frequent Czech verbs and nouns. There are 53 words in this book because there are 53 weeks in a year. Well, there are 52, but one or two days are then left over, so there are 53 words to cover them, too. I hope you'll find this book useful, and look forward to hearing from you!

Book Description
A full-length study of monocollocable words, i.e. words whose usage is severely restricted to one or a few combinations only (such as English ado in without much/further ado), that brings together corpus-based data from the four languages along with studies analysing, along both general and language-specific lines, monocollocable words in terms of their frequency, lexical as well as morphosyntactic behaviour, and various facets of their peripheral status. Each of the four langauges covered, namely, English, Italian, German and Czech also offers a short introduction of the respective languages written in English, Italian, German and Czech. A rare contribution to our knowledge of an as yet little studied field, the book will attract the attention of, and stimulate a new interest in, all who are ready to acknowledge that collocation is a core phenomenon of language – lexicologists, lexicographers with a focus on phraseology, language typologists, linguists with a contrastive and historical agenda, and language teachers alike.

Book Description
Since the 1960s quantitative linguistics has undergone a great development marked especially by attempts to work systematically with language phenomena on all language levels. Besides traditional areas where significant results were already achieved before the 60s (phonology, graphemics and lexicology), quantitative linguistics has now also penetrated into morphology, syntax, stylistics, history and typology of languages and, more recently, into semantics. This book gives a comprehensive account of the various developments and applications in quantitative linguistics. After an overview of methods used in quantitative linguistics, it discusses the main areas: lexical statistics, grammatical statistics and semantics statistics, with reference to a great number of studies of different languages and language families. Chapter 4 deals with other domains (phonology, graphemics, stylistics, typology, development of languages, word-formation), Chapter 6 deals with various applications, and Chapter 7 discusses the relationship between quantitative linguistics and the computer. The volume is completed by an extensive list of references and indices of names and of subjects.
