Book Description
Sappho - One Hundred Lyrics by Bliss Carman - THE POETRY OF SAPPHO.-If all the poets and all the lovers of poetry should be asked to name the most precious of the priceless things which time has wrung in tribute from the triumphs of human genius, the answer which would rush to every tongue would be "The Lost Poems of Sappho." These we know to have been jewels of a radiance so imperishable that the broken gleams of them still dazzle men's eyes, whether shining from the two small brilliants and the handful of star-dust which alone remain to us, or reflected merely from the adoration of those poets of old time who were so fortunate as to witness their full glory. For about two thousand five hundred years Sappho has held her place as not only the supreme poet of her sex, but the chief lyrist of all lyrists. Every one who reads acknowledges her fame, concedes her supremacy; but to all except poets and Hellenists her name is a vague and uncomprehended splendour, rising secure above a persistent mist of misconception. In spite of all that is in these days being written about Sappho, it is perhaps not out of place now to inquire, in a few words, into the substance of this supremacy which towers so unassailably secure from what appear to be such shadowy foundations.

Book Description
Sappho was the founder of the Western lyric tradition. Sappho's all-female academy was for Western lyric poetry what Plato's all-male academy was for Western philosophy-its point of origin in the form that we know and understand it. Plato himself hailed Sappho as the tenth muse. Yet all but a tiny handful of her works are lost-probably deliberately destroyed. In 1907, Bliss Carman imaginatively reconstructed one hundred lyrics from the remaining fragments in the manner of the Romantic Era. This charming book has been long out of print, having been antithetical to the anti-Romantic spirit of the mid and late 20th century. This edition includes an introduction by Miss Marianne Martindale and a new poem by Sappho discovered in 2005 (bringing the total of her surviving complete poems to four) and translated in the romantic style by Sushuri Madonna.

Book Description
Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics by Bliss Carman Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics is a poetry book by Canadian poet Bliss Driver, first published in 1904 in Boston by Carman LC Page's cousin and fellow Canadian poet Charles GD Roberts. Ots wrote an introductory article on the subject. "Sappho's Poetry" Sappho was an ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos who was included in the Greek canons of the nine poets of poetry. Most of his poetry, known and highly prized in antiquity, has been lost. But his reputation remains unwavering, supported by a fraction of the poem. Carman's method, as Roberts saw it. "Obviously this is imagining the lost song as it was discovered, and then translating it, because infinite translation is always persistent, even with the fluidity and freedom of work. It was a terrible job, as Robert admits, "as if sculptors today had to stand up respectfully and practice their craft and familiarity with the spirit, technique and atmosphere of history. Of him to revive A statue of Polyclitus or Praxiteles, which Ma Karman has been a success. "Written more or less concurrently with the love poem in Songs of the Sea Children, Sappho's new creation retains the shape of love from a woman's point of view. However, the sentiment that identifies Sappho is a Carman. Pure in sensitive and graceful pain. "
