Suzuki. Grund dafür, dass ich den Namen dieses Werkes in den Titel aufgenommen habe, ist die Bedeutung, die es für die Entstehung dieser Hausarbeit trägt. Man kann sagen, dass Suzuki mit diesem Buch mein Interesse an der Zenkultur Japans geweckt hat. Wobei Suzuki nach dem allgemeinen Erläuterungen über Zenbuddhismus und die Kultur des Zens, die sie auch in meiner Seminararbeit finden werden, seinen Schwerpunkt auf die Kampfkünste und den Tee-Weg legt, habe ich mich in meiner Arbeit genauer mit der Gartenkunst als Bestandteil der Zenkunst beschäftigt. Die Gartenkunst hat mich besonders fasziniert, da sie in Japan in einem engen Verhältnis zur Natur steht. „Anders als der abendländische Mensch, der sich als Beherrscher der Natur sieht, fühlt sich der fernöstliche als ihr Teil, als Teil des Weltganzen“(Wiese 1982, 12). Am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges befanden sich die Japaner und Deutschen in einer ähnlichen Situation. Auch hat Japans Wirtschaft seit diesem Zeitpunkt einen ähnlich starken Aufschwung wie die Deutschlands durchgemacht. Die Japaner haben jedoch anders als die „Gartenschöpfer“ in Deutschland an Jahrhunderte lange Tradition angeknüpft. Der Garten gilt hier als idealisiertes Abbild der Landschaft, als Kunstwerk. In Deutschland hat man nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die Gestaltung der Landschaft nach ästhetischen Gesichtspunkten vernachlässigt. Wichtig war es die Umwelt nach ihren Funktionen und ihrem Nutzen zu gestalten.
