Book Description
The Art of War by Sun Tzu is an ancient yet invaluable Chinese military classic that is still relevant today. This book presents a systematic and in-depth investigation into the translation and reception of The Art of War in the western strategic culture. Aided by three self-built corpora, this study adopts a mixed method including both qualitative and quantitative analysis, and aking takes both the core text and its paratexts of The Art of War into consideration. This study highlights the significance of proper approaches to translating culture in the core text and effective measures of culture reconstruction in paratexts. It is revealed that the translated Sun Tzu has undergone three major stages before it is gradually welcomed and re-canonized in western discourse. The findings bring into light the multiple factors that contribute to the incorporation of Sun Tzu’s strategic wisdom into western culture. For scholars interested in translation studies, (critical) discourse analysis as well as strategic studies, this book provides fresh insights and new perspectives.

Book Description
The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise dating from the 5th century BC. Attributed to the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu - "Master Sun," the book is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. It is commonly thought of as a definitive work on military strategy and tactics. It was placed at the head of China's Seven Military Classics upon the collection's creation in 1080 by Emperor Shenzong of Song, and has long been the most influential strategy text in East Asia. It has had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond. The book was first translated into French in 1772 by the Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. The first annotated English translation was completed and published by Lionel Giles in 1910. Leaders such as Mao Zedong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, General Douglas MacArthur and leaders of Imperial Japan have drawn inspiration from the work.

Book Description
The Art of War is the most disruptive and revolutionary book ever written about human conflict. Written in the fifth century BC during the Warring States period of ancient China and attributed to the legendary Master Sun (Sunzi), the book turned traditional thinking about warfare on its head. It advocates a radical new way of viewing warfare, replacing the traditional view of war as a form of ritualized sacrifice with a purely practical and modern view. According to Sunzi, the goals of war are achieved with hardheaded practicality, battle strategy is dictated by terrain, weather and spycraft rather than reading signs and omens, the objective of war is profit rather than glory, and the highest form of victory is winning without fighting at all. This book, by the experienced translation team of Pepper and Wang, expresses the Art of War in simple, contemporary language while remaining true to the rhythms and poetic structure of the original Chinese. A key feature of the book is its innovative step-by-step translation that lets the reader not only read the English version, but to gain deeper insights from the original text even if they don't speak or read Chinese.
