Book Description
During the 1970s, female pilots on any continent were few and far between. Overcoming personal tragedy and limited schooling, "Kucki" von Gerlach attained her private pilot's licence in early 1969 at the age of 23, the first woman to do so in Namibia, then called South West Africa. She went on to become the first female commercial airline pilot in South Africa. Her entertaining memoir recounts her challenges, triumphs and joys of being a twentieth- century aviation pioneer. Share her high-flying adventures as she "goes solo" for the first time, makes a bumpy landing just before a thunderstorm hits, and narrowly avoids disaster when one of her students freezes at the controls. You'll be inspired by her determination, her passion and her indomitable spirit.

Book Description
Captain Cook in the Underworld is a book-length poem by a gifted Maori poet, an archetypal exploration of Western mythology and legend as it 'discovers' itself in the South Pacific. The poem was commissioned as the libretto for a new work with composer John Psathas for the fiftieth anniversary celebration of Wellington's Orpheus Choir. Captain Cook in the Underworld offers fresh perspectives on the familiar story of Cook's Pacific explorations; it has a broad bi-cultural (European/Polynesian) frame of references; and Sullivan employs a bold risk-taking approach. The book is a highly stylised, 'operatic' account of the voyages, with similarities to the musical structure of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner', and opera. As the poem unfolds, European myth (Orpheus, Venus, etc) has to make space for Polynesian myth (Maui, Reinga, etc). In the final pages, Cook is required after his death to face up to the damage his expeditions have inflicted on the indigenous peoples of the Pacific. This theme of European guilt and recognition will have a strong and shocking impact.

Book Description
The international bestseller that inspired the must-watch drama on USA Network starring Alice Braga as Teresa Mendoza. From “master of the intellectual thriller” Arturo Pérez-Reverte, a remarkable tale, spanning decades and continents—from the dusty streets of Mexico to the sparkling waters off the coast of Morocco, to the Strait of Gibraltar and Spain—in a story encompassing sensuality and cruelty, love and betrayal, and life and death. Teresa Mendoza's boyfriend is a drug smuggler who the narcos of Sinaloa, Mexico, call "the king of the short runway," because he can get a plane full of coke off the ground in three hundred yards. But in a ruthless business, life can be short, and Teresa even has a special cell phone that Guero gave her along with a dark warning. If that phone rings, it means he's dead, and she'd better run, because they're coming for her next. Then the call comes. In order to survive, she will have to say goodbye to the old Teresa, an innocent girl who once entrusted her life to a pinche narco smuggler. She will have to find inside herself a woman who is tough enough to inhabit a world as ugly and dangerous as that of the narcos-a woman she never before knew existed. Indeed, the woman who emerges will surprise even those who know her legend, that of the Queen of the South.

Book Description
Originally published in 1928, this book is a comprehensive study of the Maori people and their inner lives, customs and beliefs, written by one who lived amongst them during a time before modern western civilisation had much altered their existence. This book is a fascinating read, and is highly recommended for inclusion on the bookshelf of anyone with an interest in other cultures and societies. Many of these earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
