Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy and the Theosophical Society None other can reveal it to him; none other can walk for him along the path to realization. It is written in a Hebrew Scripture that no man may deliver his brother nor make agreement unto God for him; for between the supreme Spirit who is God and the fragment of that Spirit who is man there is no intermediary, there is none with the right to dictate. And so in our Society, while we seek the truth, we bid every member seek it and find it for himself; for truth is only truth when the intellect can perceive it; only then is it truth to any individual man; and the condition of know ing the truth, of seeing the truth, is to develop to the point whence the truth is visible. The moment you see it, you must believe it; until you see it, you ought not to say that you know it. Hence the perfect freedom of our Society, the absence of all authority exercised over the minds of its members. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy and New Thought The double title given to the book is not meant to imply that Theosophy and New Thought are approximately identical. The inclusion of the two in a Single volume is rather a matter of convenience than of logical clas sification. We recognize that, while they have distinct points of similar ity, they also exhibit quite apparent contrasts in Spirit and content. In particular the intemperate speculation and headlong Orientalism of Theosophy are but partially reflected in New Thought. Both, however, make very high claims, and this fact justifies the subjecting of them to close scrutiny. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ocean of Theosophy N attempt is made in the pages of this book 2 to write of Theosophy in such a manner as to be understood by the ordinary reader. Bold statements are made in it upon the knowledge of the writer, but at the same time it is distinctly to be understood that he alone is responsi ble for what is therein written: the Theosophical' Society is not involved in nor bound by anything said in the book, nor are any of its members any the less good Theosophists because they may not accept what he has set down. The tone of settled convie tion which may be thought to pervade the chapters is not the result of dogmatism or conceit, but flows from knowledge 'based upon evidence and experience. Members of the Theosophical Society will notice that certain theories or doctrines have not been gone into. That is because they could not be treated with out unduly extending the book and arousing needless controversy. The subject of the Will has received no treatment, inasmuch as that power or faculty is hidden, subtle, undiscoverable as to essence, and only visible in effect. As it is absolutely colorless and varies in moral qual ity in accordance with the desire behind it, as also it acts frequently without our knowledge, and as it operates in all the kingdoms below man, there could. Be nothing gained by attempting to enquire into it apart from the Spirit and the desire. No originality is claimed for this book. The writer invented none of it, discovered none of it, but has simply written that which he has been taught and which has been proved to him. It therefore is only a handing on of what has been known before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy Theosophy, in a secondary sense - the above being the primary - is the body of doctrine, obtained by separating the beliefs common to all religions from the peculiarities, specialities, rites, ceremonies and customs which mark off one religion from another; it presents these common truths as a consensus of world beliefs, forming, in their entirety, the wisdom-religion, or the Universal Religion, the source from which all separate religions spring, the trunk of the Tree of Life from which they all branch forth. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Theosophy To comprehend the significance of great World changes, before Time has fully done his work, is difficult. While mighty events are still in their formative period the future is obscure. But our in ability to outline the future cannot blind us to the unmistakable trend of the evolutionary forces at work. One thing that is clear is that our boasted Christian civilization is the theater in which has been staged the most un-christian war of recorded history and in which human atrocity has reached a point that leaves us vaguely groping for a rational explanation of it. Another obvious fact is that the more than twenty nations involved have been forced into measures and methods before unknown and which wholly transform the recognized function and powers of governments. With these startling facts of re ligious and political significance before us thoughtful people are beginning to ask if we are not upon the threshold of a complete breaking down of modern civilization and the birth of a new order of things, in which direct government by the people throughout the entire world will be coincident with the rise of a universal religion based on the brotherhood of man.
