Book Description
Excerpt from The Ocean of Theosophy N attempt is made in the pages of this book 2 to write of Theosophy in such a manner as to be understood by the ordinary reader. Bold statements are made in it upon the knowledge of the writer, but at the same time it is distinctly to be understood that he alone is responsi ble for what is therein written: the Theosophical' Society is not involved in nor bound by anything said in the book, nor are any of its members any the less good Theosophists because they may not accept what he has set down. The tone of settled convie tion which may be thought to pervade the chapters is not the result of dogmatism or conceit, but flows from knowledge 'based upon evidence and experience. Members of the Theosophical Society will notice that certain theories or doctrines have not been gone into. That is because they could not be treated with out unduly extending the book and arousing needless controversy. The subject of the Will has received no treatment, inasmuch as that power or faculty is hidden, subtle, undiscoverable as to essence, and only visible in effect. As it is absolutely colorless and varies in moral qual ity in accordance with the desire behind it, as also it acts frequently without our knowledge, and as it operates in all the kingdoms below man, there could. Be nothing gained by attempting to enquire into it apart from the Spirit and the desire. No originality is claimed for this book. The writer invented none of it, discovered none of it, but has simply written that which he has been taught and which has been proved to him. It therefore is only a handing on of what has been known before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Diary Leaves: The True Story of the Theosophical Society Relates the origin and vicissitudes of the Theosoph ical Society should be unique. Whether viewed from the friendly or the unfriendly standpoint, it is equally strange that such a body should have come into existence when it did, and that it has not only been able to withstand the shocks it has had, but actually to have grown stron ger proportionately with the bitter unfairness of its ad versaries. One class of critics say that this fact strikingly proves a recrudescence of human credulity, and a religious unrest which is preliminary to a final subsid ence upon Western conservative lines. The other see in the progress of the movement the sign of a world-wide acceptance of Eastern philosophical ideas, which must work for the reinvigoration and incalculable broadening of the spiritual sympathies of mankind. The patent, the undeniable fact is, that up to the close of the year 1894, as the result of but nineteen years of activity, charters had been granted for 394 branches of the Society, in almost all parts of the habitable globe and that those issued in that latest year outnumbered the. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy and Modern Thought: Four Lectures Delivered at the Thirty-Ninth Annual Convention of the Theosophical Society, Held at Adyar, Madras, December, 1914 There is one idea that is woven in with the thought of the intelligent people of the world to-day, and it is evolution. Let us first try to grasp what evolution is. If we look at an elephant, a horse, a deer and a boar, we see that they are distinct types of creatures, having very little in common. Yet these, and others, we know are related (Fig.1). Bones have been dug up of the ancestral forms of these creatures, and by a study of them we know that long ago they were not so widely different as they are to-day. Zoologists tell us that far back in the Eocene age there existed the ancestral types out of which they have descended; these ancestral types (Condylarthra) not only differed less among themselves than do their descendants, but also there were fewer of them. Book Description
Excerpt from A Textbook of Theosophy Of those that are yet to come there is also much to be said, and on this subject too a great deal of definite information 1s available. Such information is obtainable, first, from men who have already passed much further along the road of evolution than we, and have consequently direct experience of it; and, secondly, from inferences drawn from the ob vicus direction of the steps which we see to have been previously taken. The goal of this particular cycle, is in sight, though still far above us;-but it would seem that, even when that has been attained, an infinity of progress still lies before everyone who is willing to undertake it. One of the most striking advantages of Theosophy is that the light which it brings to us at once solves many of our problems, clears away many difficulties, accounts for the apparent injustices of life, and in all directions brings order out of seeming chaos. Thus while some of its teaching is based upon the observation of forces whose direct working is some what beyond the ken of the ordinary man of the world, if the latter will accept it as a hypothesis he will very soon come to see that it must be a correct one, because it, and it alone, furnishes a coherent and reasonable explanation of the drama of life which is being played before him. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy Theosophy, in a secondary sense - the above being the primary - is the body of doctrine, obtained by separating the beliefs common to all religions from the peculiarities, specialities, rites, ceremonies and customs which mark off one religion from another; it presents these common truths as a consensus of world beliefs, forming, in their entirety, the wisdom-religion, or the Universal Religion, the source from which all separate religions spring, the trunk of the Tree of Life from which they all branch forth. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy and the Theosophical Society Friends: The four lectures which are to be delivered here during the thirty-seventh Anniversary of the Theosophical Society are intended to place before the public certain views as to the meaning of Theosophy, as to the work of the Theosophical Society. Those of you who have had a programme will have seen that we begin to-day with the declaration that Theosophy is the Supreme Knowledge, the Paravidya. Then to-morrow I am to speak of it as the Open Road to the Masters, the great Teachers of the Wisdom. On Sunday it is to be considered as the Root of all the great Religions. And lastly, on Monday, the Meaning, the Purpose, the Functions of the Theosophical Society. Let me say at the very outset that while I shall try to put before you as well as I can that which I believe to be true, no word I utter, no statement I make, is binding on, must, or ought to, be accepted by any member of the Theosophical Society. The Society has no tenets, it has no beliefs that are binding on its members. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
