Book Description
Adaptive structural systems in conjunction with multifunctional materials facilitate technical solutions with a wide spectrum of applications and a high degree of integration. By virtue of combining the actuation and sensing capabilities of piezoelectric materials with the advantages of fiber composites, the anisotropic constitutive properties may be tailored according to requirements and the failure behavior can be improved. Such adaptive fiber composites are very well-suited for the task of noise and vibration reduction. In this respect the helicopter rotor system represents a very interesting and widely perceptible field of application. The occurring oscillations can be reduced with aid of aerodynamic couplings via fast manipulation of the angle of attack, being induced by twist actuation of the rotor blade. On the one hand the sensing properties may be used to determine the current state of deformation, while on the other hand the actuation properties may be used to attain the required state of deformation. The implementation of such concepts requires comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical context, which shall be illuminated in the work at hand from the examination of the material behavior to the simulation of the rotating structure.

Book Description
This pioneering book presents new models for the thermomechanical behavior of composite materials and structures taking into account internal physico-chemical transformations such as thermodecomposition, sublimation and melting at high temperatures (up to 3000 K). It is of great importance for the design of new thermostable materials and for the investigation of reliability and fire safety of composite structures. It also supports the investigation of interaction of composites with laser irradiation and the design of heat-shield systems. Structural methods are presented for calculating the effective mechanical and thermal properties of matrices, fibres and unidirectional, reinforced by dispersed particles and textile composites, in terms of properties of their constituent phases. Useful calculation methods are developed for characteristics such as the rate of thermomechanical erosion of composites under high-speed flow and the heat deformation of composites with account of chemical shrinkage. The author expansively compares modeling results with experimental data, and readers will find unique experimental results on mechanical and thermal properties of composites under temperatures up to 3000 K. Chapters show how the behavior of composite shells under high temperatures is simulated by the finite-element method and so cylindrical and axisymmetric composite shells and composite plates are investigated under local high-temperature heating. The book will be of interest to researchers and to engineers designing composite structures, and invaluable to materials scientists developing advanced performance thermostable materials.

Book Description
This book explores the mechanics of smart nanocomposite sandwich plates, discussing various relevant theories of mechanical analysis such as buckling, vibration and dynamic instability. It presents different models for obtaining the effective material properties of nanocomposite structures such as Mori-Tanaka, mixture, micro-electro-mechanical and Halpin-Tsai. In addition, the basic equations for smart materials are introduced, while the governing equations for various examples are derived on the basis of the energy method and Hamilton’s principle.

Book Description
Focusing on the theory and state-of-the-art technologies of ultrasonic testing (UT), this book examines ultrasonic propagation in solids and its detection applications, and explores the intersection of UT technology with various fields of electromagnetics, optics and physics. UT is one of the most widely used nondestructive testing techniques due to its high performance in terms of detection efficiency and safety. The rapid development of modern industrial products and technologies has created a new challenge and demand for ultrasonic nondestructive testing technology. This book introduces the fundamentals of UT, including sound wave and sound field, interface wave theory and liquid-solid coupled sound field. It then discusses various types of UT methods, ranging from the critically refracted longitudinal wave method to ultrasonic surface wave and ultrasonic guided wave detection methods. Some newly developed UT techniques are also discussed, including phased-array UT, high-frequency UT and non-contact UT. This title will appeal to engineering students and technicians in the field of ultrasonic nondestructive testing.

Book Description
Launched in May 2000, the aims of the COST C12 cooperative action were: to develop, combine and disseminate new technical engineering technologies to improve the quality of urban buildings to propose new technical solutions to architects and planners to reduce the disturbance caused by construction in urban areas and improve urban quality of life. This volume contains the proceedings of the COST C12 final conference held in Innsbruck, Austria from January 20-22 2005. The book reflects not only the outcome of the four years’ work of the cooperative, but also the contributions made by other international experts at the conference, focused on three broad themes: mixed building technology; structural integrity under exceptional actions; and urban design.
