Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Household Cavalry, Vol. 1 The chief aim of this Book will have been fulfilled if its perusal should remind those now serving in the Household Cavalry that devotion to duty, alike in peace and in war, is for them an inherited tradition - that in long bygone days, not less than in more recent times, both Life Guards and Blues exhibited the same high qualities which in the nineteenth century elicited the unaffected admiration and unstinted praise Of the foremost military authorities. The references strewn up and down the following pages may serve to indicate with sufficient particularity the greater number of the authorities consulted. Every effort has been made to derive information from the best, and especially from original and hitherto unknown, sources. I have, in the first place, to express my most earnest and dutiful thanks to the august colonel-in-chief of the Household Cavalry, His Majesty the King, for his gracious permission to make use of the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, where a considerable portion of my task has been executed - with the additional advantage that I was able to seek the expert counsel and rely on the kindly proffered advice of the Librarian, Mr. John Fortescue. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Household Cavalry, Vol. 2 From Worms the route taken lay through Speyer where Dutch troops were added to the Allied forces, thence onward to Queich and Mainz. Shortly afterwards the army retired into winter quarters. King George returned to England, leaving behind him at Brabant the Third and Fourth Troops of the Life Guards, the Horse Grenadier Guards, and the Blues. The year 1744 ranks with 1742 as a year of dissensions, delay, and dawdle. On March 20th France formally declared war against England at Paris, and on March 3lst the English Government declared war against the French, their usual part in the ceremony being taken by the two Troops of Life Guards in London.
