But the extent to which he indulges in allusions to himself and his former works is probably due in part to the terms of familiar ity in which, as we gather also from him, he stood with the very young man to whom he was writing, and age has created in him no lack in energy, courage, or devotion. Book Description
Excerpt from The Scottish Antiquary, Vol. 7: Or Northern Notes Queries The number of fish which the Scottish salmon barrel of the period contained has been ascertained thus: Four barrels of salmon are recorded in the royal household books to have contained 94 fish - an average for each of 233, or say, in round numbers, 25 salmon; seven barrels of grilse are recorded to have contained 451 fish, equal to an average of for each, or, in round numbers, 70 grilse. These averages are checked in this manner: 58 barrels of mixed salmon and grilse are recorded to have contained 990 salmon and 1260 grilse, and supposing these to be packed separately, and 25 salmon placed in each barrel of salmon and 70 grilse in each barrel of grilse, the salmon would fill 393 barrels and the grilse 18 together just a fraction less than the number of barrels they were packed in when mixed. Book Description
Excerpt from The Scottish Antiquary, or Northern Notes and Queries, 1902, Vol. 16 Ninth jubilee, and the public press, not restricting itself to reports of current proceedings, has been enlightening all whom it may concern on the early history of the venerable institution. It is recalled how, four hundred and fifty years ago, on the solicitation of King James II., and through the persuasion of a worthy prelate, Bishop Turnbull, Pope Nicholas erected a Stadium Generate at Glasgow, a place of renown, where the air is mild, victuals are plentiful, and great store of other things pertaining to the use of man is found; how, under the fostering care of the Church, the young seminary maintained vitality till, at the Reformation, it was all but submerged and how, by the material help of royal and municipal grants, and the enthusiastic services of teachers inspired by a new faith, the revived and reconstructed university entered on a career which in the main has been one of continuous success.
