Book Description
"Stressing the importance of domestic policy and the character of civil society in the formation of foreign policy, Plummer illuminates the various factors that figured in the relationship between the two countries throughout the nineteenth century. She discusses the aspirations of Haiti's founders in building a self-governing black society, Haitian responses to the transatlantic abolition movement, the development of Haiti's creole culture, and the country's shrewd negotiations with the United States over commercial and strategic issues. The late 1800s, Plummer shows, proved a turning point in Haitian-U.S. relations as Washington's assumption of regional hegemony changed the balance of power for a Haiti long committed to a multilateralist diplomacy." "In the twentieth century, tensions between traditional and reformist elements in Haitian society erupted in a crisis that brought U.S. intervention and long-term military occupation. Plummer examines the consequences of this intervention as they were incorporated into the later interactions between the United States and Haiti and shows how these troubled relations contributed to the rise of the repressive Duvalier regime. The recent fall of that regime, Plummer suggests, now presents the "psychological moment" to which Elihu Root referred so many years ago.".

Book Description
Earle Christmas Grafton Page (1880–1961) – surgeon, Country Party leader, treasurer and prime minister – was perhaps the most extraordinary visionary to hold high public office in twentieth-century Australia. Over decades, he made determined efforts to seize ‘the psychological moment’, and thereby realise his vision of a decentralised, regionalised and rationally ordered nation. Page’s unique dreaming of a very different Australia encompassed new states, hydroelectricity, economic planning, cooperative federalism and rural universities. His story casts light on the wider place in history of visions of national development. He was Australia’s most important advocate of developmentalism, the important yet little-studied stream of thought that assumes that governments can lead the nation to realise its economic potential. His audacious synthesis of ideas delineated and stretched the Australian political imagination. Page’s rich career confirms that Australia has long inspired popular ideals of national development, but also suggests that their practical implementation was increasingly challenged during the twentieth century. Effervescent, intelligent and somewhat eccentric, Page was one of Australia’s great optimists. Few Australian leaders who stood for so much have since been so neglected.

Book Description
This volume critically reviews cognitive models of psychological time in order to clarify and enrich what is known about the temporal aspects of cognitive processes. Concentrating on how adult humans experience, remember, and construct time, chapters survey recent work on such topics as mental representations of time, timing in movement sequences, time and timing in music, and the processing of temporal information. Also included are chapters with a broader perspective, such as the impacts of methodological choices, chronobiology and temporal experience, a comparative approach to time and order, and normal and abnormal temporal perspectives. The book makes current research and theories on the psychology of time more accessible to researchers in cognitive psychology.

Book Description
Excerpt from Psychological Moments in the Lives of Some Great Americans Improved The phrase psychological moment, it Will be observed, has been used at times as the exact equivalent of spiritual vision, and the writer claims no in fallibl-e judgment in the technically cor rect use of either. They are employed simply as the best or the most appro priate phrases to describe or to account for those exceptionally brilliant acts or deeds in the lives of some great Ameri cans, as set forth in the following pages, and the writer trusts that they will be so accepted and understood by the reader. The writer had long entertained the idea that a work of this kind, if kept within proper limits and avoiding super. fluous detail, might not be unacceptable to the general reader, as a sort of artificial memory of the greatest, at least of some of the greatest, events in American his tory. But the selections of those events from the lives of the illustrious dead were not always easily made. When a man's life is so replete with ennobling and ex ceptional labors, as was Benjamin Franklin's for example, to say which was the best, the brightest, the most important and enduring, the one which might, with out impropriety, be ascribed to some psychological moment, one's judgment wavers, and however carefully he tries to make a correct decision and does finall)7 reach a conclusion, the chances are that it will not meet the approval of all.
