Book Description
Who doesn't love the magic of Christmas? Waiting for presents and enjoying the taste of the delicious food? Though the poor can't afford all this they still have the closeness of their families to treasure, unless that family is now dead! 'The Heavenly Christmas Tree' is a short story by Dostoevsky that very much resembles Hans Christian Andersen’s 'The Little Match Girl'. In St. Petersburg, on Christmas Eve, a poor boy wakes up in a damp and gloomy cellar, oblivious to the tragedy that has befallen his poverty-stricken family. The boy’s meandering through the cold, empty streets while looking thorugh windows into the warm interiors of houses depicts a rather horrific and shiveringly depressive picture of sadness and inevitability. The story offers sharp social criticism and speaks for the voiceless. Above all, it remains a compelling and unforgettable short read. Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was a famous Russian writer of novels, short stories, and essays. A connoisseur of the troubled human psyche and the relationships between the individuals, Dostoevsky’s oeuvre covers a large area of subjects: politics, religion, social issues, philosophy, and the uncharted realms of the psychological. There have been at least 30 film and TV adaptations of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s 1866 novel 'Crime and Punishment' with probably the most popular being the British BBC TV series starring John Simm as Raskolnikov and Ian McDiarmid as Porfiry Petrovich. 'The Idiot' has also been adapted for films and TV, as has 'Demons' and 'The Brothers Karamazov'.

Still, Eve sets out to do the best she can at her new job. With the guidance of her angel mentor, she'll answer a little girl's prayer for her uncle Max to find happiness again. The assignment turns out to be far more complicated than she expected. What’s more, Eve finds herself falling for Max—hard. This vivid collection of new translations by Nicolas Pasternak Slater and Maya Slater illuminates Dostoevsky's dazzling versatility as a writer. His remarkable short fiction swings from wickedly sharp humour to gripping psychological intensity, from cynical social mockery to moments of unexpected tenderness. The stories in this collection range from impossible fantasy to scorching satire. A civil servant finds a new passion for his work when he's swallowed alive by a crocodile. A struggling writer stumbles on a cemetery where the dead still talk to each other. An arrogant but well-intentioned gentleman provokes an uproar at an aide's wedding, and in the marital bed. Book Description
Are you wondering where that childlike feeling of Christmas joy is? Are you searching throughout your life for peace on earth? Does it seem like the pinnacle of the Christmas season has become the presents of Santa – and not the presence of our Savior? Lost in the glitz of our flashy advertising campaigns, shiny decorations, and storebusting, can't-miss sales, the true spirit of Christmas has been missed by millions, even among those in the body of Christ. All too often, our time and energy are devoted to gifts under a tree rather than celebrating the greatest gift of all: the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. If these worldly situations have left you longing for more, it's time for A Heavenly Christmas. Craig Van Zandt uses a biblically based study of the story of the birth of Jesus, as recounted in the book of Luke, to embrace the true meaning of Christmas. Van Zandt guides the reader to a mental, emotional, and spiritual understanding of the greatest Christmas miracle. 'Being in pastoral ministry for twenty-plus years, I am always on the lookout for material that truly moves my heart from contemplation to transformation. I'm delighted to say that A Heavenly Christmas: Enjoying the Presence of Jesus...Every Day has done just that!' – Pastor Pat Gordan Bethel Baptist Church, Santa Rosa, California
