Book Description
Excerpt from The Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore, Vol. 7: Popular Beliefs and Superstitions From North Carolina; 4874-8569 That the Ballads and Songs, both text and tunes, should 0c cupy four Of our seven volumes is natural and proper, for they have been a principal interest of collectors in the United States and Great Britain, although the music was until comparatively lately neglected. It is also right and proper that Dr. Hand's two volumes of Popular Beliefs and Superstitions should bring the Collection to its conclusion. For 'superstition' in all senses rep resents more closely and more widely than ballad singing the mind of the folk. Ballads are entertainment, superstitions are the folk mind itself. Two distinctions, moreover, are worth noting. The editing Of ballads and songs was necessarily the work Of specialists and conditioned by their special methods; whereas the superstitions and beliefs have come directly or indi rectly from the contributors and are left in their original form. The other is that these superstitions differ in degree and quality Of belief. We all have our private collection in which we believe, but not very seriously. Even the most untrained minds must qualify in some respects their adherence to this or that super stition and make of it a kind of game with themselves. Many Of these 'beliefs' call for a sense of humor and a measure of credulity in both informant and collector. While in print some of them may look trivial, they are all in fact a testimony of the immitigable vagaries, the anfractuosities, of the human mind. A real superstition is a belief you yourself do not share. What is truth? Said jesting Pilate, but the jest turned against him. Altogether these seven volumes comprise one of the largest and fullest collections covering the whole body Of folklore in a single work for any country or any region Of a country hitherto produced. All who contributed to it are to be congratulated - the hundreds Of informants who in the first instance made the work possible; the zeal Of Dr. Brown and the industry Of Dr. White in organization; the various Associate Editors; Duke Univer sity and others for their financial help; and not least Mr. Brice and his associates of the Duke Press, who have been admirably patient over a period Of more than two lustra. Book Description
Frank C. Brown organized the North Carolina Folklore Society in 1913. Both Dr. Brown and the Society collected stores from individuals—Brown through his classes at Duke University and through his summer expeditions in the North Carolina mountains, and the Society by interviewing its members—and also levied on the previous collections made by friends and members of the Society. The result was a large mass of texts and notes assembled over a period of nearly forty years and covering every aspect of local tradition. members of the Society. Book Description
Excerpt from The Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore, Vol. 1 of 5: The Folklore of North Carolina, Collected by Dr. Frank C. Brown During the Years 1912 to 1943, in Collaboration With the North Carolina Folklore Society; Games and Rhymes, Beliefs and Customs, Riddles, Proverbs, Speech, Tales and Legends One of my earliest memories of North Carolina is that of a chilly ride to Raleigh, in February 1923, in an open Ford, to attend a meeting of the North Carolina Folklore Society. This was my first acquaintance with the Collection which is now at long last being published. Since then I have had occasional and casual glimpses Of its progress, but until the present no actual connection with it. In April 1949, however, I was asked by a committee reporting to President Edens and vice-president Gross to take over the task, left unfinished at Dr. White's sudden death, Of seeing the Brown Folklore Collection through the press. Much had been done; much remained to be done. The manuscript of the present volume and that Of the Ballads and Songs (nearly two thousand pages) were ready and wait ing for the final editing. The problems Of handling the music were far from clear or settled. Later I learned Of more mate rial, some of it not even yet in writing, for which apparently no provision had been made in the plans for publication. What had at first seemed plain sailing presently ran into heavy going; but now the haven is in sight and I can honestly express my gratitude to the Associate Editors for their long patience and firm forebearing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore, Vol. 2: Folk Ballads From North Carolina This continuity will strike every reader and perhaps raise a critical question as to the editorial principles of inclusion in the present volumes. One answer has just been suggested. The other is more practical. Dr. Brown and his collaborators were still in the early stages of collecting; sifting was to follow. The General Editor, no doubt out of deference to Dr. Brown's methods, passed all the material on, as he has explained, to the Associate Editors, with responsibility to treat it as their judg ment should dictate; and the Associate Editors, probably also out of deference to their predecessors, have sometimes applied the principle of exclusion with reluctance. And the present writer, last in succession, has in turn deferred to precedent as having neither authority nor competence to decide against his betters. The reader may therefore be grateful with the Psalmist, and also remember the words of another Teacher: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over.
