Book Description
The Submarine School, Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut, and other activities of Submarines Atlantic Fleet, have collaborated in the preparation of this manual. It is designed to serve as both an instruction and an operation manual. Since, in wartime, changes in design and construction developed rapidly as a result of battle experience, it became increasingly difficult to incorporate into this text all classes of submarines. Therefore, the USS Perch, or SS313, was selected as representative of the class discussed and described in the text. In some instances, however, it was found desirable to make reference to later units and to describe and illustrate these newer installations so that a more complete text would result. This book does not have all of the line drawings included and is printed in black and white.

Book Description
Originally printed in 1946, The Fleet Type Submarine series of technical manuals remains unparalleled. Contained in its pages and those of the companion texts are descriptions of every operating component aboard a fleet boat. Underwater Log Systems Navpers 16168, acquainted crewmen with the sub¿s positioning and tracking systems. Since subs operate below the surface, the normal means of establishing position at sea -- such as sighting the sun in the day or the stars at night -- are impossible. Yet, knowing the sub¿s position and speed is vital both for navigation and combat. In an era before GPS, the log system allowed an accurate track to be made of the boat¿s position, and enabled calculation of the speed of target vessels. This book explains in detail the theory, operation, calibration and maintenance of various log systems. Originally ¿Restricted¿, this book was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Originally printed in 1946, The Fleet Type Submarine series of technical manuals remains unparalleled. Contained in its pages and those of the companion texts are descriptions of every operating component aboard a fleet boat. Submarine Distilling Systems Navpers 16170, was originally written to acquaint crewmen with the mechanisms used to replenish the sub¿s supply of fresh water. These systems are important not only for providing water for cooking and drinking purposes, but because fresh water provides cooling for the Diesel engines, and serves as a vital agent for battery and steam boiler systems. This manual includes a description of how water is distilled, and discusses its use aboard the boat. It uses the Model S and Model X-1 systems as examples, detailing their operation, maintenance, and inspection.

Book Description
The Submarine, Navpers 16160-B, is a revision of the classic WWII submarine training book, The Fleet Type Submarine, that was issued in 1961. In the post-war period, the United States developed the GUPPY class submarines, and this book uses the USS Becuna (SS-319) to acquaint crews with the design. GUPPY was an extensive conversion program that saw WWII-era boats modified with the snorkel, greater battery capacity, and a more streamlined hull. The book offers definitions of submarine components and terminology, and provides technical descriptions of various machinery and sub-systems such as the snorkel, ballast tanks, ventilation, trim and steering. Originally classified "Restricted", this book was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. Some illustrations have been slightly reformatted, and color plates are reproduced in black and white. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book Description
The riveting true story of Japan's top secret plan to change the course of World War II using a squadron of mammoth submarines a generation ahead of their time In 1941, the architects of Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor planned a bold follow-up: a potentially devastating air raid—this time against New York City and Washington, DC. The classified Japanese program required developing a squadron of top secret submarines—the Sen-toku or I-400 class—designed as underwater aircraft carriers, each equipped with three Aichi M6A1 attack bombers painted to look like U.S. aircraft. The bombers, called Seiran (which translates as “storm from a clear sky”), were tucked in a huge, water-tight hanger on the sub’s deck. The subs' mission was to travel more than halfway around the world, surface on the U.S. coast, and launch their deadly air attack. This entire operation was unknown to U.S. intelligence. And the amazing thing is how close the Japanese came to pulling it off. John Geoghegan’s meticulous research, including first-person accounts from the I-401 crew and the U.S. capturing party, creates a fascinating portrait of the Sen-toku's desperate push into Allied waters and the U.S. Navy's dramatic pursuit, masterfully illuminating a previously forgotten story of the Pacific war.

Book Description
A “beautifully researched and masterfully told” account of the US submarine force that helped win World War II in the Pacific (New York Times–bestselling author Alex Kershaw). Focusing on the unique stories of three of the war’s top submarines—Silversides, Drum, and Tang—The War Below vividly re-creates the camaraderie, exhilaration, and fear of the brave volunteers who took the fight to the enemy’s coastline in World War II. Award-winning journalist James Scott recounts incredible feats of courage—from an emergency appendectomy performed with kitchen utensils to sailors’ desperate struggle to escape from a flooded submarine—as well as moments of unimaginable tragedy, including an attack on an unmarked enemy freighter carrying 1,800 American prisoners of war. Facing devastating odds—a submarine crewman was six times more likely to die than a sailor onboard a surface ship—these brave men accomplished their mission: Silversides, Drum, and Tang sank a combined sixty-two freighters, tankers, and transports. In retaliation, the Japanese often beat, tortured, and starved captured submariners in the atrocious prisoner of war camps. Based on more than 100 interviews with submarine veterans and thousands of pages of previously unpublished letters and diaries, The War Below lets readers experience the battle for the Pacific as never before.
