This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ...b.Jose,7' which forms the seventh Mida8' of the 32 Midoth enunciated by R. Eliezer. But while in the Halaka and Agada the conformation is sought mainly in the circumstances or in the legal conditions of the cases involved, the targumist is interested in the wording. The Samaritan text, as it is well known, will often change a phrase to agree with a similar phrase somewhere else.9' The Lxx in some instances and the P. to a larger extent follow the same rule. (Com. Frankel, Pal. Ex., p. 166.). There can be little doubt that the author had been actuated by reflection. Rendering a phrase, the recollection of the other similar phrase flashed through the mind of the translator to leave its stamp upon his rendering. Mental activity of this sort accounts for many misquotations from the Bible found in the Talmud.10' But this practice could not have originated from a mere unconscious play of recollection. The translator must have been moved by something which he considered an imperative necessity. It will be observed that in most instances treated this way the author was concerned in eliminating an outstanding divergence in the version of the narrative of one and the same fact.11' Whether or not the translator pursued a definite rule in applying this principle is difficult to determine. For the most part the author is seen to make the passage second in order to conform the one preceding it. This kind of variation is placed under heading C. They are of an interpretative nature. They do not point to a different reading, as they were taken by many biblical students. I have omitted all deviations of a doubtful character or consisting of an unrendered or added Waw or change of the preposition, which might be due to the distraction of a copyist or the...

Book Description
The origin and early history of Targum Onqelos to the Pentateuch and Targum Jonathan to the Prophets have long been the object of lively scholarly discussions. Linguistic arguments have played an important role in the debate, but the grammatical treatment of the Aramaic of these texts has focussed on phonological, orthographical, morphological and lexical matters, leaving syntactic aspects mostly unconsidered. Using the corpus of 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel as a basis, this book investigates five key topics in the syntax of the Aramaic of Targum Jonathan: the use of the states of the noun (determination), the morphosyntax of the numerals, the distribution of the genitive constructions, the verbal system, and word order. It includes a detailed comparative discussion of these syntactic features with reference to other types of Aramaic and attempts to show how the syntax of Targum Jonathan can shed light on the classification of its language within Aramaic as a whole and therefore contribute to our knowledge of its origin and early history.

Book Description
This volume is concerned with the origin and development of the Targum to the Prophets, focusing for this purpose upon the Twelve Prophets (from Nahum to Malachi). A wide-ranging introductory chapter sets current research in context by surveying almost two centuries of Targumic study. It is argued that the evidence in the extant text for a Second Commonwealth phase in the Targum's history is meagre and that, in particular, the Qumran Habakkuk pesher is not dependent upon the Targum to Habakkuk. Other issues discussed are the Hebrew Vorlage of the Targum, incipit formulae, 'Additional Targum' and the standard Targum, the haggadah in the Targum to Zechariah 3 in the light of a (so-called) Eastern Aramaic linguistic element, Targum and Peshiá¹ta, land and divine presence, and the final redaction of the Targum.

Book Description
The relevance of the Targums (Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible) for the understanding of the New Testament has been a matter of dispute over the past three hundred years, principally by reason of the late date of the Targum manuscripts and the nature of the Aramaic. The debate has become more focused by reason of the Qumran finds of pre-Christian Aramaic documents (1947) and the identification of a complete text of the Palestinian Targum of the Pentateuch in the Vatican Library (Codex Neofiti, 1956). Martin McNamara traces the history of the debate down to our own day and the annotated translation of all the Targums into English. He studies the language situation (Aramaic and Greek) in New Testament Palestine and the interpretation of the Scriptures in the Targums, with concepts and language similar to the New Testament. Against this background relationships between the Targums and the New Testament are examined. A way forward is suggested by regarding the tell-like structure of the Targums (with layers from different ages) and a continuum running through for certain texts.
