There has recently been an explosion of interest around the application of mobile communication technologies to support health initiatives in developing countries (mHealth). As a result, there is a need to promote and share rigorous research for better informed policy, programming, and investment. There are, however, few platforms for the exchange of information and proven practice between practitioners and researchers. The subtopic of prevention, well-being, and health promotion within mHealth is particularly ripe for deeper exploration. While many reports tout the potential of mobiles to influence behaviour change for health, there is limited knowledge about what works (and what does not work), and about how to evaluate current and future programs. This is a focused edited volume with contributions from leading researchers and practitioners to identify best practices in using mobile technologies to promote healthy behaviours (and reduce unhealthy ones) in resource-constrained settings with a special focus on developing countries. This topic is inherently interdisciplinary. Though the opportunities to leverage mobile phones for health are new, the challenges confronting researchers and practitioners are well-established and theoretically complex, with roots in decades of work on mediated behaviour change campaigns and theories.

The Tobacco Settlement Proceeds Act, a referendum passed by Arkansans in the November 2000 election, invests Arkansas' share of the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement funds in seven health-related programs. Myopia represents an important public health issue in the 21st century, affecting an estimated 2.6 billion people in 2020. In the context of the Be He@lthy Be Mobile initiative, the World Health Organization and the International Telecommunication Union have developed the MyopiaEd initiative. The initiative aims to support policy- and decision-makers and implementers to develop, implement and monitor large scale mHealth initiatives targeting (i) improving awareness and health literacy of the importance of regular eye examinations and spectacle compliance amongst children and adults, and (ii) supporting behaviour change that contributes to delay the age of onset, and slow the progression of myopia, the two main predictors of developing high degrees of myopia (and its associated complications) in later life. This toolkit includes evidence-based message libraries for a range of population end-user groups, along with operational guidance and resources to support implementation of the initiative.
