Book Description
Learning from the West? brings insight into political life after the collapse of communism and the fall of the Iron Curtain in the late 1980s. For Communist parties and their successors (CSPs), the challenge was perhaps the greatest – to redefine themselves within new, ‘westernised’ political systems. As these parties sought to adapt their programmatic appeals to their new environments, they searched for policies from abroad that could fit these new political structures. The political parties of Western Europe provided a rich range of programmes from which policies could be drawn. This book analyses how, to what extent and under what conditions external influences came to bear on the programmatic development of CSPs. It argues that while some parties remain neo-communist in orientation, growling about the evils of capitalism on the far-left of their respective political systems, others have developed into social democratic actors, embracing programmatic ideals that often bear a strong resemblance to those of centre-left actors in Western Europe. This book was previously published as a special issue of The Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics.

Book Description
This book looks at the way in which foreign policy has changed in communist states. It considers especially the relationship between domestic reform and foreign policy reform at times when formerly closed societies are becoming more open to the outside world. It focuses on three European and three Asian states, analysing their different paths to reform and looking in depth at the question of why some communist regimes collapse and why those in Asia have proved more durable than those in Europe.

Book Description
The development of the communist successor parties will vitally affect the course of democratic consolidation in the post-communist countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Yet it would be incorrect to assume that the communist successor parties will affect the course of democratic consolidation in exactly the same way, or develop along the same lines. Indeed the communist successor parties have evolved in a variety of different ways. Some reformed communist parties, like those in Hungary and Poland have been so successful that they have been able to form governments. Others, such as those in the Czech Republic have experienced great difficulties in effecting an internal transformation. Moreover, the empirical evidence indicates that the internal conflicts within the successor parties over issues such as breaking with the party s past and the degree to which they are willing to compromise the ideology of Marxism Leninism have also been quite different. What accounts for the divergent paths followed by the communist parties of Central and Eastern Europe? Why are some of these parties able to make a relatively successful transition from communist parties committed to democratic competition while others seem far less capable (or willing) to do so?

Book Description
Politicians tied to a set of policies provide people with actual choices. They attract like-minded activists, campaign in more focused ways, and build an attractive party label. Last but not least, they are more likely to succeed in public office. Political parties in many countries are struggling to shift from personality-based or clientelistic-focused approaches -- to more programme-based strategies as they reach out to voters. What features do successful programmatic parties exhibit that others lack? How is their success related to the quality of their leadership, the prosperity of the country, or the capacity of the state? What impact do economic or political crises exert on how politicians behave? Why must programmatic parties be considered together with citizens demanding better services? This book is based on the work carried out by three teams of political scientists who examined what drives and strengthens programmatic politics, even under unlikely conditions. The authors draw lessons from Brazil, Bulgaria, the Dominican Republic, India, South Korea, Ukraine, Taiwan, Turkey, and Zambia, and uses the most up to date and comprehensive research on democratic accountability and citizen-politician linkages.
