Book Description
The reveries a man and his most talented companion mouse, these stories are representative of a significant subgenre of fantasy.Emerson Hough (1857-1923) taught school before studying law at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1880. Hough was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced law at White Oaks, New Mexico, but found it had no appeal for him. He turned to a literary career by taking camping trips and writing about them for publication. His body of work eventually included 27 novels and hundreds of short stories and articles.Hough's early works included The Singing Mouse Stories, for children, in 1895 and the nonfiction The Story of the Cowboy in 1897. He had his first major success in 1902 with the novel The Mississippi Bubble, which became a best-seller. The Way of the West followed the next year.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Singing Mouse Stories This is my room. I live here; and my friends come here sometimes, such as I have left. There is little to offer them, but they are welcome to what there is. There is the table. There is the fire. There are not any keys. That is my coat upon the wall. It is worn, a little. The barrels of the old gun are worn; and the stock of the rifle, broken in the mountains long ago, is mended but rudely; and the tip of the old rod is broken, and the silk is fraying in the lashings, and upon the hand-grasp the cord is loose. Book Description
Sarah and Julia love to visit their Grandmother for their weekly story time. This week Grandma tells the story of a newspaper editor who, in 1846 Portland, Maine, was informed of a real singing mouse. After much consideration, he decides to investigate. On the first visit to the man who owns the mouse, the editor is disappointed because the mouse does nothing. The owner convinces the editor to return for a second visit, insisting the mouse will sing then. On the second visit, the editor will find out if the mouse can sing or if it's just a hoax. This is based on a true story.
