Book Description
Excerpt from Short Lessons in Theosophy Ans. - Theosophy is the master-key of eternity to the under standing of God and man. True Theosophy is a question of spiritual development, of soul revelation, of finding the Christ within, listening to the Divine Logos - the Word. When we can find God within, where both Jesus and Buddha say God resides, we realize our divine nature. Genuine Theosophy is the Christ of this truth rising out of the tomb of error, it is the doc trine of self-control, the crucifixion of the senses, the liberation of the spirit from passion, the resurrection of all that is divine within us. Theosophy is a Spiritual science, it is a knowledge of the eternal true science, to know the Christ, the living Word which speaks from the Infinite Divine Being. The Spirit is resurrected, there is henceforth no more death. The true The os0phist drinks his inspiration from the spiritual air, and knowl edge of the universe becomes to him an open book. We out grow sacerdotalism, we become true priests, our daily sacrifice the daily surrender of the lower to the higher nature. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy and the Theosophical Society None other can reveal it to him; none other can walk for him along the path to realization. It is written in a Hebrew Scripture that no man may deliver his brother nor make agreement unto God for him; for between the supreme Spirit who is God and the fragment of that Spirit who is man there is no intermediary, there is none with the right to dictate. And so in our Society, while we seek the truth, we bid every member seek it and find it for himself; for truth is only truth when the intellect can perceive it; only then is it truth to any individual man; and the condition of know ing the truth, of seeing the truth, is to develop to the point whence the truth is visible. The moment you see it, you must believe it; until you see it, you ought not to say that you know it. Hence the perfect freedom of our Society, the absence of all authority exercised over the minds of its members. Book Description
Excerpt from A Textbook of Theosophy Of those that are yet to come there is also much to be said, and on this subject too a great deal of definite information 1s available. Such information is obtainable, first, from men who have already passed much further along the road of evolution than we, and have consequently direct experience of it; and, secondly, from inferences drawn from the ob vicus direction of the steps which we see to have been previously taken. The goal of this particular cycle, is in sight, though still far above us;-but it would seem that, even when that has been attained, an infinity of progress still lies before everyone who is willing to undertake it. One of the most striking advantages of Theosophy is that the light which it brings to us at once solves many of our problems, clears away many difficulties, accounts for the apparent injustices of life, and in all directions brings order out of seeming chaos. Thus while some of its teaching is based upon the observation of forces whose direct working is some what beyond the ken of the ordinary man of the world, if the latter will accept it as a hypothesis he will very soon come to see that it must be a correct one, because it, and it alone, furnishes a coherent and reasonable explanation of the drama of life which is being played before him. Book Description
Excerpt from Popular Lectures on Theosophy There have been of late months so many en quiries about Theosophy that I thought I would take advantage of my being here for some time, to give a course of lectures covering practically the main outlines and teachings of this much talked of subject - Theosophy; so that any one who is not a student may be able to realise the general trend of thought and the scope of the subject with which we shall have to deal in the next five weeks. I Shall try to put the subject as plainly as it can well be put, and to avoid technical ities as far as possible, SO that nothing more may be wanted for the first understanding of this subject by a man who possesses a certain amount of in telligence and education. I do not pretend that Theosophy in all its aspects can be made intelligible to the uneducated or to the thoughtless. But, for a person of ordinary intelligence and education. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Theosophy In an attempt to compile a brief, popular outline of so vast and far-reaching a movement as Theosophy, it becomes the writer to approach the subject with ab solute fearlessness and impartiality; and most of all is it necessary for whoever undertakes to write on so stupendous and universal a theme, to distinctly re member that no limited definition of the word, as applied to the tenets of any special society or school of thought, can possibly do justice to the term. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Theosophy To comprehend the significance of great World changes, before Time has fully done his work, is difficult. While mighty events are still in their formative period the future is obscure. But our in ability to outline the future cannot blind us to the unmistakable trend of the evolutionary forces at work. One thing that is clear is that our boasted Christian civilization is the theater in which has been staged the most un-christian war of recorded history and in which human atrocity has reached a point that leaves us vaguely groping for a rational explanation of it. Another obvious fact is that the more than twenty nations involved have been forced into measures and methods before unknown and which wholly transform the recognized function and powers of governments. With these startling facts of re ligious and political significance before us thoughtful people are beginning to ask if we are not upon the threshold of a complete breaking down of modern civilization and the birth of a new order of things, in which direct government by the people throughout the entire world will be coincident with the rise of a universal religion based on the brotherhood of man. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy Theosophy, in a secondary sense - the above being the primary - is the body of doctrine, obtained by separating the beliefs common to all religions from the peculiarities, specialities, rites, ceremonies and customs which mark off one religion from another; it presents these common truths as a consensus of world beliefs, forming, in their entirety, the wisdom-religion, or the Universal Religion, the source from which all separate religions spring, the trunk of the Tree of Life from which they all branch forth. Book Description
Excerpt from Theosophy and New Thought The double title given to the book is not meant to imply that Theosophy and New Thought are approximately identical. The inclusion of the two in a Single volume is rather a matter of convenience than of logical clas sification. We recognize that, while they have distinct points of similar ity, they also exhibit quite apparent contrasts in Spirit and content. In particular the intemperate speculation and headlong Orientalism of Theosophy are but partially reflected in New Thought. Both, however, make very high claims, and this fact justifies the subjecting of them to close scrutiny. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
