The Asantes and the British fought several times. Those battles were called the Anglo-Asante wars. Prominent amongst them are the Nsamankow war (January 21, 1824), Akatamanso war (August 1, 1826), Sagrenti war (March 14, 1874) and Yaa Asantewaa war (March 25, 1900) The constant attacks by the Asantes against the Fante States disturbed trading activities on the coast. The two sides fought in 1801, 1806, 1826, 1863, 1869, 1873, 1874 and 1900. The Southern states like the Fante and Ga relied on the protection of the British, who had economic interest on the coast. This brought fear to the Asantes, who directed their anger towards the British. For example, Sir Charles MacCharthy, the British Governor of Sierra Leone refused to accept Asantes total control over the Fante states and their lands. This started the first Anglo-Asante war on January 21, 1824.

Sargrenti is the name by which Major General Sir Garnet Wolseley, KCMG (1833 – 1913) is still known in the West African state of Ghana. Kofi Gyan, the 15-year old boy who spits in Sargrenti’s eye, is the nephew of the chief of Elmina, a town on the Atlantic coast of Ghana. On Christmas Day, 1871, Kofi’s godfather gives him a diary as a Christmas present and charges him with the task of keeping a personal record of the momentous events through which they are living. This novel is a transcription of Kofi’s diary. Elmina town has a long-standing relationship with the Castelo de São Jorge da Mina, known today as Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482 and captured from them by the Dutch in 1637. In April, 1872, the Dutch hand over the unprofitable castle to the British. The people of Elmina have not been consulted and resist the change. On June 13, 1873 British forces punish them by bombarding the town and destroying it. (It has never been rebuilt. The flat open ground where it once stood serves as a constant reminder of the savage power of Imperial Britain.) After the destruction of Elmina, Kofi moves to his mother’s family home in nearby Cape Coast, seat of the British colonial government, where Sargrenti is preparing to march inland and attack the independent Asante state. There, Melton Prior, war artist of the London weekly news magazine, The Illustrated London News, offers Kofi a job as his assistant. This gives the lad an opportunity to observe at close quarters not only Prior but also the other war correspondents, Henry Morton Stanley and G. A. Henty. Kofi witnesses and experiences the trauma of a brutal war, a run-up to the formal colonialism which would be realized ten years later at the 1885 Berlin conference, where European powers drew lines on the map of Africa, dividing the territory up amongst themselves. On February 6, 1874, Sargrenti’s troops loot the palace of the Asante king, Kofi Karikari, and then blow up the stone building and set the city of Kumase on fire, razing it to the ground. Kofi’s story culminates in his angry response to the British auction of their loot in Cape Coast Castle. The loot includes the solid gold mask shown on the front cover of the novel. That mask continues to reside in the Wallace Collection in London. The invasion of Asante met with the enthusiastic approval of the British public, which elevated Wolseley to the status of a national hero. All the war correspondents and several military officers hastened to cash in on public sentiment by publishing books telling the story of their victory. In all of these, without exception, the coastal Fante feature as feckless and cowardly and the Asante as ruthless savages. The Boy who Spat in Sargrenti’s Eye tells the story of these momentous events for the first time from an African point of view. It is told with irony and with occasional flashes of humor. The novel is illustrated with scans of seventy engravings first published in The Illustrated London News. This book won a Burt Award for African Literature which included the donation by the Ghana Book Trust of 3000 copies to school libraries in Ghana. In 2016, at the annual conference of the African Literature Association held in Atlanta, GA, it received the ALA’s Creative Book of the Year Award. Manu Herbstein has done what the best cultural historians of Africa should do: that is, read between the lines of the colonial archives to imagine what it was like to be an African alive at that time, witnessing and interpreting events. The First World War was a widespread conflagration in world history, which, despite its European origins, had enormous effects throughout the world. Fettered to European politics and diplomacy through colonialism, Africa could not claim a position of neutrality, meaning that it mobilised human and natural resources to support the imperial war effort. Fighting both within and outside Africa, colonised Africans who were compelled or coaxed by the colonial regimes of the warring European countries fought Europeans and Africans too. The soldiers fought with great dedication and contributed significantly to successes attained by the belligerent European colonialists. Similarly, African non-combatants, like carriers, brought zeal and enthusiasm to difficult wartime tasks. The impact of the war on Africa was immense with far-reaching consequences in specific colonies, and touched the lives of all Africans under colonial rule. Although the continent’s connections to the war were immense and diverse, these experiences are not widely known among scholars and the general public. This is because, over the years, most studies and commemorative events of the war have centred on the European theatre of the war and its outcomes. BY Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Yakub Bamba Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Yakub Bamba was born in Accra, the capital of the Republic of Ghana then Gold Coast in the middle of the year 1950. He started learning the Alphabets of Arabic and the Holy Quran in a Makaranta (School) at New Town in the Capital. His father Alhaji Yakubu Bamba sent him to his niece Hajia Habibah and her husband (who is his father’s cousin) Alhaji Ahmad Musah in Ejura-Ashanti to continue learning the Holy Qur’an when he was ten years old, that was in 1960. In 1963, he was sent to Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana, to one Mallam called Alhaji Yakubu Ishaq to continue his learning of the Holy Quran. In January 1966, he was brought back to Ejura at the request of his elder cousin Hajia Habibah, and then sent to L.A. No. 1 Primary school by her, to fulfill the advice of his departed father. He left the school after only two terms, because of a confusion between him and a teacher who wanted to cheat him. So he was absent from class room up to the end of the following term, when he was moved to T.I. Ahmadiyah Primary School in Ejura – Ashanti. In 1969, he was pulled out from the school because of his intelligence, with the reason that he would become a Christian if he continued, because all the teachers at that time were Christians. And that was the end of classroom for the then young and intelligent man. In 1972, he decided to go back to Tamale on his own to continue his Arabic and Islamic education, and teaching children Arabic Alphabets and recitation of the Holy Qur’an. In 1976, he decided to go to Kano in the Northern Nigeria to continue his education, where he learnt various courses: Islamic law, Arabic language, Arabic grammar, Etymology, Commentary of the Holy Quran, and the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) Traditions. He 6 specialized in Islamic law of inheritance. He came back to Ghana in 1983 and established a school in Ejura called: Ihya-ud-dini Islamic School, popularly known as Mallam Aminu’s Islamic School in 1984. The school was adopted by the Government in 1998, and is doing well in the West African Examinations. His duties are: Teaching, Preaching and Writing Several Islamic and Knowledgeable books. He has over fifty (50) books to his credit currently, ranging from prose to poetry, or poetical composition. One of his most important books is this book "The Independence Day of Ghana”.
