Wound given to my feelings, that if the Attorney General, had been retamed, to fuppott thefprofecution he would have exerted himf'elf 'with equal force and fuccefs againft my opponent. The counfel of my adverfary was permitted to accufe me of having connived at the dii'gtaee of my wife. It is a. Matter of the mofi perfect indif' ference to me, whether I fiand well or ill in the opinion of that gentleman; but of I the good Opinion of mankind I am indeed very jealous, and will prove my claim to 'it to be well founded. The opinion of the world has never yet been a matter of 1 indifference to me, and the rank I hold in fociety calls loudly on me. To refute the mali cions calumny of having connived at the in trigue's of my wife. It is incumbent on me, not merely to (late, but to prove, that my entire and implicit confidence in her integrity' rendered meblind to a tranfaetion, which I difcl'ofed the very infiant I detected it and if I bring before the tribunal of the public what has been difcufl'ed m a court of law, it is for the exprefs purpofe of doing away the grofs imputa.
