Excerpt from The Organization, Work, and Method of the Red Cross Institute for Crippled and Disabled Men The first step is, necessarily, an individual study of each cripple who is a candidate for training. Rarely are two men crippled alike. Their educational and industrial experiences have been different. Their tastes and aptitudes vary greatly. All these are ele ments in the problem. As a general rule, a man should be trained for an occupation in which any knowledge or skill he may have already acquired may be turned to his advantage. This does not mean that a man who has been a misfit in the trade he followed before his injury may not be taught a new one, but economy demands that as little as possible be scrapped in making over the man industrially. A mechanic should ordinarily be trained for a mechanical trade, while a man with commercial tastes should be fitted for a different career.
