Book Description
A new science is reengineering the fabric of life. Synthetic biology offers bold new ways of manufacturing medicines, clothing, foods, fragrances, and fuels, often using microbe fermentation, much like brewing beer. The technology can help confront climate change, break down industrial pollutants, and fight novel viruses. Today, researchers are manipulating life forms and automating evolution to create vegetarian “meat,” renewable construction materials, and cancer treatments. In the process, they are changing our concept of what life science can achieve. Is this a new industrial and information revolution—or dangerous tinkering that could unleash unintended consequences? Programmable Planet is a grand tour through the world of synthetic biology, telling the stories of the colorful visionaries whose ideas are shaping discoveries. Ted Anton explores the field from its beginning in fighting malaria in Africa to the COVID vaccines and beyond. Covering medical and agricultural triumphs and blunders, he examines successes in energy production, plant gene editing, and chemical manufacturing, as well as the most controversial attempts at human gene enhancement. This book reports from the front lines of research, showing policy makers’ struggle to stay abreast of the technologies they aim to regulate. Even-handed, lively, and informative, Programmable Planet gives a glimpse of the promise and problems of a new biology-based industry.

Book Description
Programmed Sheep is an adult comedy built on my observation that humans all behave like sheep. Therefore, we are treated as such by government, politicians, employers, and the police, who all control our lives. We are being programmed to think like they want us to think, taking away our free will, freedom of speech, and even our own identity. I think most of the problems of the world are a direct result of interference in our lives by people using propaganda and lies to control the way we do think, which in turn makes us unhappy “lost sheep.” And if we oppose them, they seem to just ignore us anyway and continue with their own agenda, regardless of what the people really want. So rather than following the flock as a mindless sheep, I wanted to break free and make readers aware of the world as I see it. The book starts when I was going through mental anguish and everything started to get me down. I was feeling low, depressed, and unappreciated as a worker, so I started a self-therapy exercise, and began to write down my thoughts. The question you should ask yourself is simple: Do you control your mind or does somebody else control it for you? In Programmed Sheep, M.A. Fricker in his comedy approach brings to the surface what he sees is really going on in the world, and helps stop you from just following the flock. He is working on the sequel, Paranoid Sheep.

Book Description
Challenging established views and assumptions about traditions and practices of filmmaking in the African diaspora, this three-volume set offers readers a researched critique on black film. Volume Two of this landmark series on African cinema is devoted to the decolonizing mediation of the Pan African Film & Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO), the most important, inclusive, and consequential cinematic convocation of its kind in the world. Since its creation in 1969, FESPACO's mission is, in principle, remarkably unchanged: to unapologetically recover, chronicle, affirm, and reconstitute the representation of the African continent and its global diasporas of people, thereby enunciating in the cinematic, all manner of Pan-African identity, experience, and the futurity of the Black World. This volume features historically significant and commissioned essays, commentaries, conversations, dossiers, and programmatic statements and manifestos that mark and elaborate the key moments in the evolution of FESPACO over the span of the past five decades.

Book Description
A Catholic priest, in a quiet coastal town, wonders why God allows humans the freedom to make decisions, good or bad, on their own -- a concession known as Free Will. Unexpectedly, Mauro, a child with an unusual ability to understand science in relation to God’s creation, emerges. The two team up to explore the designs of the Creator through the theological knowledge of the one, and the meditative revelations of the other. The priest soon realizes Mauro’s abilities are miraculous and must be shared with the Church but, to do so, he must first make his voice heard through the lumbering hierarchy of the Vatican. As Mauro grows older and studies the sciences, his revelations become more sophisticated, as does his awareness that the Creator wants his children to understand His work. Just as the priest finds an ally to help him get his message to the Vatican, other forces discover Mauro’s talents and are eager to harness his knowledge: some for commercial purposes and others for criminal gains and launch into pursuit. The industrious priest helps Mauro evade capture and locates a safe place for him. While in hiding, Mauro’s revelations grow deeper, revealing the links between the evolution of the cosmos, the surge of the planet Earth, the evolution of species, and the rise of humans with Free Will to a common cause -- the desire of the Creator to have us, his children, whom He could care for with infinite love. Mauro further visualizes how God, as a committed father, desires to share with us all his creation but is getting exasperated by the bickering and violence. To make matters worse, his children have polluted planet Earth to the point of self-destruction. Help comes at the last minute and Mauro is given safe refuge in Rome. His abilities are recognized by top theologians from all faiths and a committee of scientists, humanists, and politicians is formed. A manifesto about the future of humanity is proclaimed to the world. Mauro eventually marries and creates a family after discovering that the woman he has long loved but suspected to be one of his potential foes has been an ally all the while. The priest, content with his role in bringing Mauro’s miraculous talents to light, returns to the solitude of his small parish.
