Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Church Music: A Discussion of Purposes, Methods and Plans However that may be, it seems to me proper to hide away in this preface some personal statements that ought to be made and yet do not seem to fit into the general discussion. They will enable the few wise men who read prefaces to understand the situation better and to reach a juster conclusion regarding the practical study that follows. The writer was asked by the faculty of the Theological Department of Vanderbilt University to prepare a series of lectures on church music. He gladly accepted the Opportunity and delivered the lectures before the students and faculty in the autumn of 1903. Somewhat rewritten and enlarged they were subsequently given to the students of Union Biblical Seminary. The kindly interest shown in the discussion at both seminaries led me to thoroughly recast and largely amplify the materials contained in the lectures for the benefit of the larger clerical and musical public who it seemed to me needed the help they were intended to afford. Book Description
This is a complete revision of a detailed resource which has been the essential guide for church musicians working in the Episcopal church for over 20 years. A Guide to the Practice of Church Music (1989) was originally written by Marion J. Hatchett, who taught for many years at the Episcopal seminary at Sewanee, was key in developing materials for The Hymnal 1982. This updated revision contains brief, but articulate discussions of the role of music in the church, the variety and nature of music ministries (people, cantor, choirs, organists, directors, instrumentalists, clergy, and music committees); principles for the selection of hymns, psalms, canticles, and other service music and their sources in materials from CPI and beyond; guidance for planning services for all rites of the church in the BCP and the Book of Occasional Services. Updated revision includes hymnals, electronic resources, and materials published since The Hymnal 1982.

Book Description
Congregations that are alive and vibrant have vital music programs. How did they get that way? There are sensible and practical steps to develop such a program which begins with a clear vision of the end product. This book addresses the many interrelated issues of defining and embracing the leadership role in the church music program that is required of clergy in parish ministry and essential for a healthy congregation. Clergy and musicians work toward the same goals; however, clergy are trained differently from musicians. How does this fact impact their relationship, and how can they learn to work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect? The practical issues of employment can be addressed more effectively in this atmosphere. If one is looking for the right musician for the parish, what qualities does one seek? How does one find such a rare and gifted individual? A successful search complete, how does the clergyperson work harmoniously with the music leader? This book provides a blueprint for: • Developing a vision for music in your parish • Locating a musician who is a partner in ministry • How music comes and goes in the church’s repertoire • Moving from musician as performer to musician as pastor

Book Description
This book includes thirty-three provocative essays on corporate worship, hymnody and psalmody, issues, and composers and composition. It explores scripture teaching on the role of music in the church. This volume exists because it contains ideas that every worshiper (pastor and layperson) and Christian musician (performer and academic) may benefit from reading, since it is entirely possible to live in the subculture of the evangelical church without encountering some of them. - Publisher.
