The essays collected in offer close analysis of an array of cultural representations of the Canada–US border, in both site-specificity and in the ways in which they reveal and conceal cultural similarities and differences. Contributors focus on a range of regional sites along the border and examine a rich variety of expressive forms, including poetry, fiction, drama, visual art, television, and cinema produced on both sides of the 49th parallel. The field of border studies has hitherto neglected the Canada–US border as a site of cultural interest, tending to examine only its role in transnational policy, economic cycles, and legal and political frameworks. Border studies has long been rooted in the US–Mexico divide; shifting the locus of that discussion north to the 49th parallel, the contributors ask what added complications a site-specific analysis of culture at the Canada–US border can bring to the conversation. In so doing, this collection responds to the demands of Hemispheric American Studies to broaden considerations of the significance of American culture to the Americas as a whole—bringing Canadian Studies into dialogue with the dominantly US-centric critical theory in questions of citizenship, globalization, Indigenous mobilization, hemispheric exchange, and transnationalism.

These symposia and workshops provide vibrant opportunities for researchers and industry practitioners to share their research experience, original research results and practical development experiences in the new challenging research areas of parallel and distributed computing technologies and applications. It was the first time that the ICA3PP conference series added symposia and wo- shops to its program in order to provide a wide range of topics that extend beyond the main conferences. The goal was to provide a better coverage of emerging research areas and also forums for focused and stimulating discussions. With this objective in mind, we selected three workshops to accompany the ICA3PP 2010 conference: • FPDC 2010, the 2010 International Symposium on Frontiers of Parallel and Distributed Computing • HPCTA 2010, the 2010 International Workshop on High-Performance Computing, Technologies and Applications • M2A 2010, the 2010 International Workshop on Multicore and Mul- threaded Architectures and Algorithms Each of the symposia / workshops focused on a particular theme and complemented the spectrum of the main conference. All papers published in the workshops proce- ings were selected by the Program Committee on the basis of referee reports. Each paper was reviewed by independent referees who judged the papers for originality, quality, contribution, presentation and consistency with the theme of the workshops.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 13th International Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing. It also contains extended abstracts of submissions that were accepted as posters. The workshop was held at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. As in previous years, the workshop focused on issues in optimizing compilers, languages, and software environments for high performance computing. This continues a trend in which languages, compilers, and software environments for high performance computing, and not strictly parallel computing, has been the organizing topic. As in past years, participants came from Asia, North America, and Europe. This workshop re?ected the work of many people. In particular, the members of the steering committee, David Padua, Alex Nicolau, Utpal Banerjee, and David Gelernter, have been instrumental in maintaining the focus and quality of the workshop since it was ?rst held in 1988 in Urbana-Champaign. An overview of the most prominent contemporary parallel processing programming models, written in a unique tutorial style. With the coming of the parallel computing era, computer scientists have turned their attention to designing programming models that are suited for high-performance parallel computing and supercomputing systems. Programming parallel systems is complicated by the fact that multiple processing units are simultaneously computing and moving data. This book offers an overview of some of the most prominent parallel programming models used in high-performance computing and supercomputing systems today. The chapters describe the programming models in a unique tutorial style rather than using the formal approach taken in the research literature. The aim is to cover a wide range of parallel programming models, enabling the reader to understand what each has to offer. The book begins with a description of the Message Passing Interface (MPI), the most common parallel programming model for distributed memory computing.
