Book Description
This is the third, penultimate volume in the Toward a Theoretical Biology series. The contributors agree that there is a major problem in finding methods of dealing with the great complexity of biological systems. Molecular biology has given us considerable insight into the nature of the elementary units and processes of life, but to understand how these are put together to form systems that are usually too complicated to be analysed completely, but exhibit global properties of simplicity, presents biologists with an intellectual challenge that physical sciences and chemistry must also face. The problem is approached from several different angles: quantum physics, topology, and statistical mechanics. A stimulating discussion is recorded: that the behaviour of randomly constructed networks exhibits simplicity. Thoughtful analyses of complexities in such basic biological processes as the genetic control of differentiation, evolution, and ecology is also included. Some of the questions dealt with are: What kinds of theories should we wish to have in connection with developmental biology? And have we got them? The subject matter of 'Organization Stability and Process' is defined as the basic concept of biology. None of the contributors herein contained is a molecular biologist in the modern sense, but molecular biology casts a shadow over this work, at least in so far as they challenge its interpretative aggressiveness and its enthusiastic but unendearing self-confidence and self-sufficiency. This volume inaugurates a new and authentic style of scientific literature. The contributions are thoughtful, imaginative, illuminating, and exceptionally well written.

Book Description
One of the major challenges facing organization studies has been for a long time to develop an operational content to the notion of routines . This book offers important advances in this direction, both conceptually and through illuminating case studies. Giovanni Dosi, Sant Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa, Italy This book showcases advanced empirical research that applies the concept of organizational routines to understanding organizations and how they change and evolve. The contributions gathered in the book cover qualitative, quantitative, and archival methods for empirical research applying the concept of organizational routines. Specific issues highlighted include the use of event-sequence methods in the analysis of organizational routines, the impact of standard operating procedures on recurrent behaviour patterns, and the stability, resilience, and change of organizational routines. The book thus provides an overview of different empirical methods applied to study organizational routines, and of their prerequisites, analytical power, and contribution. This comprehensive book will be of great interest to scholars and postgraduate students in the fields of organization theory, strategy, and organization behaviour. Researchers in organization, management and economic science, organizational change and evolutionary theories will also find this book invaluable.

Book Description
The performance of governments around the globe is constantly in the spotlight, whether as a celebration or indictment of their activities. Providing evidence on strategies to improve the performance of public agencies is therefore essential to the practice of public management. Originally published in 2006, this important contribution to the debate explores issues of measurement, research methodology, and management influences on performance. It focuses on three key questions: what approaches should be adopted to measure the performance of public agencies? What aspects of management influence the performance of public agencies? As the world globalizes, what are the key international issues in performance measurement and management? In examining these questions, the contributors debate both methodological and technical issues regarding the measurement of performance in public organizations, and provide empirical analyses of the determinants of performance. The book concludes with groundbreaking work on the international dimensions of these issues.

Book Description
"Books and articles come and go, endlessly. But a few do stick, and this book is such a one. Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process broke fresh ground in the understanding of strategy at a time when thinking about strategy was still in its early days, and it has not been displaced since." —David J. Hickson, Emeritus Professor of International Management & Organization, University of Bradford School of Management Originally published in 1978, Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process became an instant classic, as it bridged the formerly separate fields of strategic management and organizational behavior. In this Stanford Business Classics reissue, noted strategy scholar Donald Hambrick provides a new introduction that describes the book's contribution to the field of organization studies. Miles and Snow also contribute new introductory material to update the book's central concepts and themes. Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process focuses on how organizations adapt to their environments. The book introduced a theoretical framework composed of a dynamic adaptive cycle and an empirically based strategy typology showing four different types of adaptation. This framework helped to define subsequent research by other scholars on important topics such as configurational analysis, organizational fit, strategic human resource management, and multi-firm network organizations.

Book Description
Process approaches to organization studies focus on flow, activities, and evolution, understanding organizations and organizing as processes in the making. They stand in contrast to positivist approaches that see organizations and phenomena as fixed, static, and measurable. Process approaches draw on a range of ideas and philosophies. The Handbook examines 34 philosophers and social theorists, both those commonly linked to process thinking, such as Whitehead, Bergson and James, and those that are not as often addressed from a process perspective such as Dilthey and Tarde. Each chapter addresses the background and context of this thinker, their work (with a focus on the processual elements), and the potential contribution to organization and management research. For students and scholars in the field of Organization Studies this book is an entry point into the work of philosophical thinkers and social theorists for whom the world is far from being a solid place.

Book Description
This book contains methods and tips to help managers and supervisors significantly reduce firefighting and create a predictable and high-performing workplace. The methods and techniques outlined in this book includes best operations management practices from the science of Industrial Engineering, Lean, and the Toyota Production System. With a stable work environment, a manager can focus on implementing rapids process improvements to enhance performance outcomes. A process-oriented organization requires high compliance and reliance on the process to deliver desired performance outcomes. Chapter 1 provides the framework for process stability when implementing a product-service line or a start-up operation. This chapter helps managers view an organization as a system and show how process compliance can deliver operational safety, quality, delivery, and cost metrics. Managers can't do all the work to create a stable work environment. Chapter 2 outlines the basic concept of rapid small improvements involving everyone in the organization. This sets the tone for adopting the continuous improvement process as part of the organizational process and culture.A common goal defines purpose and the reliance of an organization for people to work together across all departments. Chapter 3 describes the process of linking strategic goals to each department and individual in the organization. It also describes the organization-wide communication structure to monitor performance, identify areas requiring assistance, and provide resources to resolve performance issues. Chapter 4 explains the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle as a simple and effective process for continuous performance improvement. The PDCA cycle provides a structured approach to prepare a work center to collect data, review the results, identify performance variations, and implement targeted corrective action. 5S is not about cleaning and organizing. Chapter 5 explains why most organizations get it wrong implementing 5S. See how 5S can help communicate process standards with minimal procedure writing and training. Every initiative in an organization must have purpose to achieve organizational success. Process improvement initiatives must be part of a strategic plan. Chapter 6 explains the process of developing a strategic plan including resource analysis, market analysis, SWOT analysis, objective development, strategy development, and the identification of necessary initiatives.Procedure writing can be cumbersome a painful experience. Unlike conventional methods, Chapter 7 presents a simple and effective approach. The method utilizes (1) process flow charts, (2) an outline approach for listing detailed requirements, and (3) listing of responsibility for each main step. It also explains the strategic-cascade approach linking all SOPs from the strategic, tactical, and operational levels. When organizations focus on the process to drive performance outcomes, they will need a performance dashboard to identify areas for improvement. Chapter 8 will help managers identify key performance metrics for every department and team in the organization. This chapter presents the strategic-cascade approach linking financial and strategic performance metrics to every department and team.
